LOOKING TO JESUS!

"Run the Race"!
In this season of life, running isn't always an option! I would probably trip over my cane! Plus, endurance would probably be short-lived.
Bible Marginalia reminded me, "entrusting to Him is key to endurance."
Run the Race. Which race? Hebrews 12:1 gives the answer, "the one set before us."
Bible Marginalia again......Life of faith = long run...ie not a sprint or an easy run.

Before discouragement set in, I read the answer to running the race in the life of faith. The all important phrase of Hebrews 12:2----looking to Jesus!
Think focusing, trusting and relying on "Jesus, the name above all names" as the source of our life of faith. (Philippians 2:9)

Looking to Jesus at my life stage/age  needs more than a ck off the list quiet time.
It can require extended time.....often that includes being still, looking up and out the window that frames my prayer chair. Blue skies or rainy fog--the weather doesn't seem to matter.
It's the condition of my heart that matters as I seek time with Him.

Know Peace. No Fear!
Looking to Jesus is soul affirming.

BOOKMARKED!

Friend and prayer warrior Carolyn W. has an entire book of quotes. Quotes also reside in her head....probably because she shares them with family/others daily.
I, not so much, I have them scribbled in marginalia in various Bibles or journals.... some barely decipherable as my hands age, others literally bookmarked as they are more current.
  • DON'T LET WHAT YOU HAVE (stuff).....HAVE YOU! (Buddy L.)
  • ALL THAT YOU ARE AND ALL THAT YOU HAVE IS A GIFT FROM HIM! (Buddy)
  • OWN HIS OWNERSHIP OF YOU. (Cole H.)
  • GOD ALLOWS WHAT HE HATES TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT HE LOVES. (Joni Eareckson Tada)
Bookmarked---whether in your head, on a page, or in a book, do your best to keep up with "life impacting, quote worthy info."

NEED A BREAK.....or at LEAST A PAUSE?!

Our culture is always telling us we do....need a break, that is. We even deserve it. Just ask McDonalds. My favorite breaks include reading and crossword puzzles, especially USA Today ones. (
Today my "break" is to be a time of pondering, a PAUSE,
A focus on meditation with my marginalia quotes from previous weeks.

Putting
Aside
Unnecessary
Sidelines to
Embrace meditation
  • God is always doing more than I know. (Romans)
  • God is builder of all things. (Hebrews 3:4)
  • Gospel, a victory announcement, is our fuel and motivation. (Romans 1-3)
  • Unrighteous and self-righteousness are both sins,
  • Gospel is a spoken message. (Romans 10:13)
  • If I abide, He will reside. (John 15)
  • It's never too dark for God's light to penetrate. (No one is ever beyond His reach.)
  • Jesus changes everything. (Hebrews)
  • Mercy matters! (Luke 6:36)
  • Worship follows belief. (John 9:38)

MEIDTATION, combined with scripture, MATTERS---it's a refreshing pause!

CHOOSE: TO HEED

Pray and Obey. Pithy with a punch. It even rhymes!  A great reminder to heed.
The Lord has been revealing much to me in His word this week as I have chosen to "pray" scripture.
Now....it's up to me. Will I obey the truth I have been shown?
Some obedience is much easier than others. But God.....wants it all.
Taking every thought captive seems to me a besetting sin. (2 Corinthians 10:5,) i.e. worry. (Philippians 4:6)
Marginalia to the rescue. Chuck Swindoll notes, from the anxiety chapter 3 of Christ at the Crossroads, reminded me:
I worry when...
ADD--- something else to my already FULL agenda
          ---my reputation/pride to a situation
---someone else's expectation of  me ..........& then I become angry.

I worry when I calculate without God....considering consequences of "addition without him" seems a good beginning point for lots of needed heeding.

Now, I need to choose to heed, but I think I'll just focus on inappropriate addition---that seems doable today. I certainly don't need to add frustration or anger to my life, which Swindoll sees as a result of too much addition.

CHOOSE: 5 FOR 5th FRIDAY

Random jottings that jumped off the page and hit me right between the eyes.
  1. We worship our work; work at our play and play at our worship.
  2. Forgiveness is a commitment to live with the consequences of another person's sin. (Neil Anderson)
  3. Everyone on earth is either a missionary or a mission field.
  4. Satan doesn't make you do anything, he just fluffs the pillows.
  5. A little thing is a little thing...but faithfulness in a little thing is a BIG thing. (Hudson Taylor)
Choosing to think on these 5 jottings from the margins of my "old" Bible as I sit under tent canopy at Deep Creek while the rain pours down & I wait for the New Yorkers to arrive with Lucy. The younger ones are tubing  the creek in the rain saying it makes the creek run faster.

CHOOSE: FIVE FOR THE 5TH FRIDAY

Choose: Acts of Kindness could have been this entry because kindness is key in relationships.
According to a google search, I've already written 5 entries on kindness and according to the marginalia in my NKJV Bible, a needed reminder....
"Desire a life measured more by kindness than by competency."

So...you can "choose" to search through the links below for your favorite of the five:
Kindness Reciprocated pays it forward.
Mature in Kindness.
Kindle Kindness.
Kindness "gentles" responses of others, even family.
Be Kind.
http://dotsydetails.blogspot.com/2017/01/choose-kindness.html?m=0 (1/24/17)

Desire a life measured by kindness more than by competency. (Marginalia, NKJV)
Choose: To Be Kind in at least one of the 5 ways. It will bless your heart!

CHOOSE: FOUR FOR THE FOURTH FRIDAY

This entry could have been "Choose: Humor" but I love alliteration.
So-o-o....thanks for humoring me.
I hope to add to your "humor" by adding 4 "funny" marginalia quotes.
Maybe just funny for me as one with a sharpening pencils fetish, modus operandi of panic, who is an all around human mess, and needs to allow God to "turn (my) mess into a message."
  1. Jesus needs to photo bomb all those "selfies." (Cole Huffman)
  2. Family Motto at our house is "Wake up and Panic!"  (Carolyn W.)
  3. REMEMBER: If there's not blood, smoke or fire, it's NOT a crisis. (Carolyn W.)
  4. Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil, it has no point! (unknown)
Choosing to laugh today as I focus not on my faults but focus more on how God can use them.

CHOOSE: FIVE FOR FRIDAY

Choosing 5 fave marginalia prayer quotes for my Friday focus. Often the source is not listed, so my apologies to all those folks not cited.
  1. The purpose of prayer is NOT to change God, but to change us.
  2. Puritans say, "Pray until you pray."
  3. Talk to God about men before you talk to men about God.
  4. During times of prayer, cultivate faithfulness, not feelings and sensations.
  5. Praise is Christ's address.
Today, I choose to heed the truth found in these tidbits written in the margins of my Ryrie NIV study Bible.

CHOOSE: JOY'S RECIPE

Intentionality is the buzzword in today's culture. Be intentional about your life choices!

It's certainly true for me. If I don't "intentionally" choose items on a long weekly agenda, they get lost in the shuffle.
Even as I have decided to choose joy as my "focus" this year, I need a daily reminder. Sometimes an hourly reminder. How does one schedule joy? Can't joy always be a spontaneous overflow? I don't have answers to my own questions....

......But God....has graciously shown me new "intentional "sources of  "joy" in notes from an old (NIV) Bible. Notes to remind me how joy can overflow from my "healthy thinking." Healthy thinking that is a result of renewing my mind in His word. This time "my" marginalia helped as well.

It's the same Bible I used Wednesday for blog entry from Psalm 19 and to pray for friends, and the Bible I used again yesterday, in Psalm 17, as I prayed for a dear friend. This morning, I "intentionally" chose my same ragged NIV Bible blog entry with verses from Psalm 16.

More notes found.....
.....Marginalia 9/20/2009 ---between cancer surgeries, notes from Jonathan Morrow's (I haven't a clue who J. Morrow is.) "5 Ingredient Recipe for Joy."
"Joy"
  1. Devotion. (Psalm 16: 2a)
  2. Gratitude. (Psalm 16: 2b)
  3. Surround self with others who trust God. (Psalm 16: 3)
  4. Our inheritance. (Psalm 16: 6)
  5. God's Guidance. (Psalm 16: 7-9)
Notes also included 2 ingredients NOT found in a JOY recipe.
One could label those as "Joy Killers."

1. Critical Spirit. (An inward critical spirit often overflows with complaint, is my thought.)
2. Unhealthy Thinking. (Joy flows from thinking, so don't interrupt the "joy flow!")

DO NOT Choose to add those ingredients into your life........
..........choose pure JOY instead!

CHOOSE: REFLECTING ON GOD'S WORD

I just love it when I am praying scripture for others and God show's me hidden jewels.
Such was the case with this week's prayers for Uganda folks from Psalm 19 as I chose to "refresh" my recollections as I began reflecting on God's word.
For me, refreshing during my times of meditation can come when reading God's word from a translation other than the translation I had been using at that moment. Thus ESV was starting point but NIV held the new treasures.

NIV Marginalia.
There in my ragged NIV (think much loved and much used) were NOTES!
Perfect notes for wordsmiths!
God reveals Himself through nature (v.1-6) and scripture. In verses 7-9 there are:
6 synonyms6 adjectives & 6 results for scripture revelation.

Synonyms:
Law. Statutes. Precepts. Commands. Fear of the Lord. Ordinances.
Adjectives:
perfect. trustworthy. right. radiant. pure. sure.
Results:
reviving the soul, making wise the simple, giving joy to the heart, giving light to the eye,  enduring forever,
altogether righteous (as theses decrees come together in making decisions for human situations.

The law of the Lord is perfect,
reviving (refreshing, NIV 2011) the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
    making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right,
    giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.
The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The ordinances (decrees NIV, 2011) of the Lord are sure, (firm, NIV, 2011)
 and altogether righteous.

10) God's words....They are more precious than gold,  than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb......in keeping them is great reward! (Psalm 19:10-11, NIV, 1996---emphasis is the blogger's)

God's word in and of itself is "refreshing" in any translation. (NIV, 2011)

Knowing God for me comes when reflecting on His word. It's my best daily choice.

Marginalia---The more we (I) know God, the more (my) life should reflect Him. (Tim Lundy)

Notetaker

7/14/10 I’ve been called lots of things in my day and one of the most common is notetaker. (“Spellcheck” doesn’t like that I’ve made this a compound word, but to me it is just that.) A compound word is made when two words are joined to form a new word. One who takes notes is joined with the notes she takes just by the “doing” ---the action that so defines her. I’m sure that “spellcheck” would let me get away with it if I added a hyphen but I’m in a stubborn mood today and don’t feel like being hyphenated.

Notetaking seems to come naturally to me. I leave my marks everywhere---even in my devotional books and Bible. My grandmother Gena would have considered marking a Bible a travesty, if not sacrilegious but my grandmother, Mama Davenport was at least brave enough to underline in hers. I know, because I use her Bible often---those underlines have given me great insight into her life---which feels like a great privilege to me.

Marginalia in favorite books, from “self-help” and “how-to” to inspirational books and Bible study guides and resource books, is where much of my notetaking occurs.
My calendar looks like one big notepad. This week as I’ve been packing for an upcoming trip I’ve referred to “Big Water” notes from ’07, ’08 and ’09 calendars. It’s the way I know to bring 3 nightlights, not to buy Sam’s potato salad because not many folks ate it, or to be sure and pack a Sharpie® so that those water bottles, that the kids only take a few sips from, can be labeled and refrigerated for later use. (I don’t like that kind of waste----I know because I “noted” that in a journal one time!)
Even atlases and maps have my notes on them----everything from date & “our” time and distances of travel to places to eat along the way, followed by a rating once we eat there.

As many of you know, I often try to color code may notetaking or at least keep it in some kind of order----not on torn off slips of paper that end up here, there and yon. Lately that does not have the order that I like and I’m spending way too much time looking for my “notes.”

I think I’ve gotten more obsessive about notetaking as I have aged---I feel as if it helps me to hold on to the memory that I seem to be losing. I’m sure it gives me some semblance of control---now that’s a real joke.
Sometimes I feel as if I can’t function without my notes and that’s when I know I’ve gone to the extreme. I think I need to branch out and really wing it. Nah---not yet. Nevertheless, I do need to learn to give myself permission not to always have everything together (which I don’t ---I just keep trying) Maybe a blank sheet with none of my notes/directions would allow the Lord to more fully direct my steps. Of course, then I’d probably have to write down His agenda for future reference----you know, just in case I need it.

Ecclesiastes 9:10 says that "whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all of your might"----(I guess notetaking could fit there.) Though later in chapter 12 it says that too many words and writing is vanity and wearying to the body.

I think the real answer is in I Corinthians 10:13, “whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Even notetaking can be taken to the extreme and have nothing to do with Him----so how do I temper this? Any suggestions from a godly notetaker? This notetaker would love to hear from you.

Serene Sabbath

1/25/09 Serene Sabbath---planning to "be still" For those who have asked, son Josh's web site will give you instant updates even when I get wherever I'm going---he has a "magic phone"---iPhone, I think" so he can do all this from any distance---All you need to do is enter your e-mail address and your e-mail password and then he approves you and you'll get the messages. www.lotsahelpinghands.com/c/610549/
This is the day the Lord has made: let us rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalm 118:24) Today's verse in the Upper Room (which I try to read along with Daddy) is one of my favorites, Zephaniah 3:17 (between Habakkuk and Haggai---bet that helped a lot didn't it??

As a librarian, I commend the use of a Table of Contents, especially when they have a listing in alphabetical order.) The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. Maybe rejoice is the word of the day---I think I'll just rejoice quietly. Today's My Utmost for His Highest said, Be in a state of expectancy---my marginalia was ----expectancy NOT expectation.
