HOPETIMIST!

How does one become a hope-timist? Is that even a word?
It is now, at least in my vocabulary.
H eals

Where is this hope found? In God's Word---that's the obvious answer. But....sometimes we struggle even when we know the "right" answer.

For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from Him. (Psalm 62:5)
I wait for the LORD, my whole being, and in his word I put my hope.
(Psalm 130:5)

Hmmmmm---Another word jumped out as I was searching for hope.
WAIT!
I don't always wait well! But God in His love and mercy showed me what to do while I wait. Help others find hope.

May I be a true hope-timist and help others as I wait.

WAITING.....WAITING....WAITING.........

Waiting is not Easy!  (Click to share with a young child.)
Sometimes a children's picture book can simply say it well.
Many Mo Willems books resonate with me whether Elephant and Piggie, Pigeon or Knuffle Bunny books. Knuffle Bunny was such a favorite, that going "boneless" became a shared word in our household. If you've ever had an obstinate grandchild go boneless on you, you get the picture.

During this pandemic season, I have found myself waiting for my life to return to normal. I am now realizing that I need to learn to embrace these moments as normal. Day in and day out, I must celebrate each day as God guides.....even if I "feel" like I'm going nowhere.

I just need to "wait" for the Lord. As it reminds me in Psalms 27:14, I just need to be strong and take heart as I seek His direction. I've been losing heart lately & growing weary (Galatians 6:9) instead of considering Him. (Hebrews 12:3) I need to keep hoping for what I do not see instead. (Romans 8:25)

I need to celebrate life as it is as I wait.

Waiting---adverbial directions

Waiting is not static. In the spiritual realm waiting is a time of expectancy. Waiting expectantly is the psalmist's adverbial rendering.
In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly. NIV (Psalm 5:3)

As Andrew Murray puts it, "Christians do not know.....the unspeakable blessedness of continually waiting on God." (Waiting on God, p. 13)

Continually. Uninterrupted. A constant in my life. Not just this specific time of waiting for emotional, physical and possible medical directions.

Patiently. An adverb that is not in my adverbial repertoire when it comes to waiting.

I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry. (Psalm 40:1)
I want a new song --Now---actually yesterday.  (Psalm 40:3)

So you, by the help of your God, return, hold fast to love and justice, and wait continually for your God. ESV Always is an appropriate waiting adverb too. God's Word translation says, "always wait with hope for your God." Love the propositional phrase that emphasizes how to wait---with hope. (Hosea 12:6)
Waiting, with adverbial directions-----and prepositional hope!
Waiting on God----but without GRAMMATICAL GAFFES, I hope! After all, it's Wordsmith Wednesday!

Adverbs to never use----never and always, oops

Seems like I'm always waiting for something.
Obviously, I'm not the only one. Shauna Niequest in cold tangerines, writes of waiting to become something else----the person she is biding her time to be...." (p. 15)
Biding. A Mama Davenport term. I've always known, because of her, that sometimes one has to "bide her time" BUT not to miss opportunities and adventures along the "wait."
I recommend an icy glass of sweet tea and a Niequest's chapter "on waiting"* as an adventure during my wait for results of hubby's MRI.
*Enlarge the pic & enjoy celebrating "little" moments...
instead of waiting for those big ones!

Now I'm learning that waiting never needs to be static. Waiting is attitudinal and "the wait" does not have to be undesirable or uninteresting.

Hubby said, just last night, "I can't wait for SPRING!" Yet, the calendar shows---this "Leap Year," means he will have to wait an extra day!
But...he can wait with a positively expectant outlook, maybe even celebrating the 365.25 day itself.
It's his choice---- always a choice for each of us in our waiting game!

Today's "Google" pic might indicate a "nap" as a good option as one anticipates springtime.
I never say "no" to a nap!

WAIT---WEIGHT another "spiritual" grammar lesson

Homophones, a type of homonym, sound the same but differ in meaning and spelling.

Jenni W's lessons on "Praying in the Waiting Room" spoke volumes to me as I began to understand the importance of a "shift in thinking."

Waiting rooms mostly have a bad connotation, unless it's an OB floor where loved ones are awaiting a new little "bundle of joy." Yet, there is a sweetness that comes from lessons learned in God's waiting room. I am grateful for the spiritual aspect of these grammar lessons the Lord has for me.
Wait to weight was an important "homophone" lesson for me. A lesson in shifting. Shifting my weight to His strength. Waiting can be burdensome. Hard to carry alone.
As I wait on the Lord, I need to shift my weight as I lean on Him. Leaning on anything else---my own understanding or planning, draws me away from God. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Shifting---A lesson of rest for my soul and rest for my restless mind. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Trusting in anything apart from God has me in my own stead.....and I am no substitute for God!
Give Him the weight of your (my) burdens as we (I) wait for answers.

FRET NOT, DOTS!

Today's Streams in the Desert entry was "spot on" for me!
Dear restless heart, be still; don't fret and worry so;
God has a thousand ways His love and help to show;
Just trust, and trust, and trust, until His will you know.
Dear restless heart, be still, for peace is God's own smile,
His love can every wrong and sorrow reconcile;
Just love, and love, and love, and calmly wait awhile.
(Edith Willis Linn)

More adverbs for my waiting.  Calmly added to patiently. Maybe I should start an adverbial "Fret Not While Waiting List" for dear ole Dots!

Listen Up: a grammar lesson

3x----for me is a "Listen up, Dotsy" from the Lord.

This past week "wait" has crossed my waiting path several times. Three times in three days.
"I will wait upon the Lord" lyrics kept blaring in my head. (Think continuous action verb.)
"Colorful Day" workshop, where a team of women prayed for every attendant by name and God's best placement for each, placed me in a  session on "Praying in the Waiting Room." (Now there's an adjective I can understand)
Affirmation#3---I picked up USA Today's crossword puzzle on Monday and the clue's, "Like a good wait-er," answer---"patient" really gave me a "head's up---listen up."
But, it was the adverb that came as I read God's word, that reinforced the need to take it to the next level---an adverbial descriptor---patiently. That level leads to the "heart of the matter."
Waiting is one way. It's what a good "wait-er" does---even USA Today knows that.
Patiently waiting is God's way.
I waited patiently for the LORD; And He inclined to me and heard my cry. (Psalm 40:1)
Listen up----take into your mind and then move it to your heart!

Remembrances

TOGETHER AGAIN!!
Pastor Taylor Park said it well---a time for grieving as well as celebrating as Terry Parlow has now left his blindness and paralysis behind and is embracing a new life in the heavenly realm.
Whole. Complete.
Yesterday, I was privileged to share memories of Terry Parlow with his friends and family.
Terry Parlow Memorial Service 1/21/15

Many of you here have known the Parlow family longer than I have, yet we all know one thing---Terry Parlow loved the Lord.....

...and that love for the Lord “kept” Terry (Numbers 6:24)--God’s grace enveloped him in a way and with a depth that those of us on the outside could only marvel. It was that “light” which Terry had an abundance of---a light intensified by the physical darkness of his blindness, light which Terry shared with me by lifestyle example.

For a few years after Terry’s 2004 accident, I would read to him on Wednesday afternoons---he loved biographies and history----esp war stories ---civil war---World War II
A few months ago I read a book whose title spoke to me of Terry---All the Light we Cannot See, a story of a young girl who was blind from age 6--and the storyline emphasized all she was able to see and sense in relationships, even without her sight, reminded me of Terry’s “condition.” Terry “saw” spiritual truth at every turn and was willing to share with everyone---the dependence and grace necessary to live blind and wheelchair bound---all the while seeing God’s hand in it and celebrating God’s goodness. I never once saw that faith waver.

Oswald’s Chamber’s 1/19 entry in his devotional book, My Utmost for His Highest, spoke volumes to me about ”darkness being a time to listen and wait on God to send the light.” Terry would wait and then he would share what he was learning, his own personal "light"---
Being blind and paralyzed removes all self-sufficiency but there is still a choice ---bitterness or acceptance.
Humility and acceptance were a part of Terry’s faith fabric. I never saw anything but humility and acceptance from Terry---ever trusting God throughout these past 10 years. All else paled as Terry continually “placed His confidence in God Himself, not in “blessings.”

Terry epitomized the words from Psalm 130:5. “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits and in His word, I hope.

Terry Parlow used his “disability platform” to shed God’s light on all of us and we were blessed for it.

Recently, one of my most memorable “Terry blessings” was the day the lift on his van broke. I was speaking at First Evan’s monthly “He Cares,” a ministry for the homebound. He was between ICU visits at the time and had said very boldly, “I’ll be there!”…..and he was. Determined, he had asked sweet Ronye, his caregiver for help and she “pushed him in his wheelchair” all the way there. What an encouragement to me. What a man of his word!

Terry loved the Lord and he loved Claudia---since Whitehaven high school days until her cancer took her home. Tt\hey were always together, outliving medical projections for both of them and celebrating their 50th anniversary just months before she died.

“His Claudia,” the ultimate caregiver, ever at his side, even at Shepherd Ctr when Terry was deemed the worst---at Shepherd’s that’s like being the worst of the worst. She kept him going. All of us seemed to say their names in tandem. A true couple.

As former neighbor Julie said that, “After moving to Memphis, Terry and Claudia embraced her like a warm blanket” ---always encouraging, guiding and sharing God’s love with her. They did it together.

Terry loved the Lord, loved Claudia, and loved sports, esp. if they wore TIGER BLUE---he taught hubby Larry and friend Terry Tippet the value of a good radio commentator --one who could make the “game” come alive for a sport’s fan. He said he could visualize every move in a Tiger game if Dave Woloshin were commentating.
Terry made us all aware that when “listening” to TV commentators it was a LOT harder---as commentators rarely recap and spend more time giving their own opinions instead of describing an event---or saying, “Would you look at that?” “Or have you ever seen anything like that?” It’s easy to understand a “Blind Viewers” frustration.

Terry loved the Lord, loved Claudia, and loved sports ---and that competitive spirit spilled over into another love---an affinity which Terry and I shared. We both loved Jeopardy and often “watched” it together. Many days I had an unfair advantage because there would be a “visual clue” category, but somehow that seemed to bother me more than it bothered him. What chance does a “blind” man have in identifying mustaches of famous people when you can’t see the mustache, much less the face of the person.
Even if I were in another part of the condo, and the “T-h-i-s- is Jeopardy” theme music came on, he would call out to tell me it was starting. Ronye & Katherine, his God-sent caregivers, seemed to always have it on Channel 3 at 3:30 on week-days.
His memory was incredible and he would often comment on the girl from Wisconsin or some other tidbit gleaned from one of the contestants---esp. the blind gent who came back for the “Battle of the Decades” this past year.
Terry had his own rules for keeping score. Even on days we watched it separately, he would phone me with an update on the number of Jeopardy questions he answered, and the number from the double Jeopardy round. Occasionally, he would factor in the true daily double but that was harder to do since he only gave himself points and not money amounts.

But....the "Final Jeopardy" category was where Terry ruled---because if he got the Final Jeopardy answer, he considered that a real win!

Saturday January 17th Terry got the Final Jeopardy answer. Terry always knew the Final Jeopardy answer to his own life.

The question is, “Where will Terry spend eternity?”

The answer (in question form, naturally)   “Where is heaven?”

Terry “Got” the correct answer the minute he stepped into the Presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That makes Terry the winner…..

I’m just grateful to have been able to be a player in his life.

Waiting on God

11/30/13
How does one die gracefully? If I’ve learned anything these last 2 1/2 weeks, I've learned that one who lives a grace-filled life, is able to approach death in the same manner.

Sweet friend, Claudia, had been “terminal” for over two years while defying all the medical odds and passing two life-expectancy time-lines. But, since November 13, many of us watched her live a graceful life within her most recent given time-line----two weeks to two months.

A life full of grace. A life full of blessings to others. A life full of encouragement. A prayerful life. A thankful life.

Her heart and her mind full of grace and gratitude---living spiritually to the fullest while waiting for God.

Her wait may be over.....but not the impact of her life.

3 Ws

10/2/13  3 Ws  were blog thoughts that wandered away after I headed to bed last night. Regrettably, I think the first one was worry----thus the headache that had me to "take to the bed." Possibly the second W was wait. Certainly waiting is a more spiritual activity than worry. Worry is a lack of trust. Worry is sin.
Waiting on God for direction can sometimes be difficult, especially for "doers"......for those who prefer answers sooner rather than later. Yet, today as I tried to recapture the Ws from the recesses of my memory, I realized that God was waiting on me. Waiting for me to give up the worry and trust Him in the situation that loomed with unknowns.

Once that happened, wisdom arrived all the way from France. Words of wisdom via God's child. So timely....but then His timing would be, wouldn't it?

An email arrived from Aggie to ask about the absence of the 3 Ws blog text, AND to share truths she gleaned from from her Lydia prayer cell's meditation of Psalm 67, especially the first 2 verses. To her it was just a way of sharing today's meeting, which is similar to our prayer for revival group. To me it was God-speak. (Even the cross ref to the Numbers verse was one used by me in  9/16 & 9/18 blog entry)

May God have pity on us and bless us!
May he smile on us. Selah  (Numbers 6:24-26)

Then your ways will be known on earth,
your salvation throughout all nations.

She added: What stood out to me was the fact that when we are in trouble or testing, we - I - tend to ask God for the way out, "O God, help me!  Send your light and blessing and grace."  But vs 2 makes it clear that the purpose of God's intervention and blessing is (also) for the purpose of making Him and his ways known to those around us, and to the ends of the earth.

Aggie didn't have a clue what I was facing but God knew.

When I replied to her with my situation concern, she sent more wisdom gleaned from others along her life path.

"WORRYING does not take away tomorrow's TROUBLES; it takes away today's PEACE."

She also wrote:  I wish that a lesson learned once is permanently acquired.  Not necessarily.  One time I said to a retired pastor, "I get discouraged because I get the impression that I'm always going through the same things, same lessons and spinning my wheels.  He replied, "No, Agnes.  It's a spiral and each time we go through a lesson we move on, and upward.  If we come to what seems like the same thing again, it is on a different level, because we are moving on in the Lord, growing in grace." That was SUCH an encouragement to me!  God is good, He is faithful.

That's it---the 3rd W---came to mind.

WORSHIP---He is worthy.
He, who is good and faithful and waits patiently on me to give my burden of worry to Him, is worthy of worship.

Waiting Room Angst

6/30/11 Frustration loomed as I had to ONCE AGAIN, declare my gender, race, SS #, etc. Somethings don't change folks----so why after coming to this same doctor's office for 25+ years do I have to fill it out yet again? Were others as frustrated with this clipboard conundrum? I glanced around the waiting room. Mostly old folks. Only one with a cell phone---how rare is that! Most looking at their toes or a magazine. No one looking up. One coughs, others lean away. All waiting as announcement blares, "patient for Dr. Finn." Each hopeful that they might be "said patient." Nurse appears at the door. Patient's name is called. Others resume their unresponsive waiting posture in the drab chairs of the "waiting" room.

Waiting seems to be hard for all of us, especially when the answer might be "negative"---waiting for the possible pink slip, waiting for the diagnosis, waiting for the RX that will offer us hope, waiting for the Lord, whose voice seems to be faint.
For today, my diagnosis wasn't perfect but nothing out of the "aging ordinary." Steps will be taken. Different paths tried. More waiting will take place as different meds are adjusted, 'til right prescription is found, hopefully without bad side effects.

All of this has me coming to realize that waiting doesn't have to be passive. Action continues. Steps are taken. Different procedures are tried or paths taken while waiting on the best direction.
Sounds like the Christian life to me. Right now I'm still waiting on the Lord for direction in several areas. Maybe some of it will be trial and error while I continue to seek Him.
Wait for the Lord; Be strong, and let your heart take courage; Yes, wait for the Lord. (Psalm 27:14)
Kneeling in God's waiting room, I await more divine information. As it comes, I'll share it. You'll just have to wait along with me.

Waiting Rooms

7/13/10 We have all been in different periods of waiting in our lives---sometimes in actual rooms. Waiting rooms in labor and delivery are fun places to be. Not so much so in an ICU waiting room. Today’s trip to West Clinic to wait for info on Mommar was somewhere in between those beginning and ending extremes.

I’m not sure what I expected---maybe a sterile environment with people slumped in chairs under a spell of self-pity, dwelling on their own sorrow or disappointment. Would there be tears of despondency? I knew there would be tears from brother-in-law Bill. He had cried yesterday during her birthday celebration.

There were lots of different waiting rooms at West clinic---somewhat warm and inviting, especially considering the circumstances. But the room that I saw that seemed to be filled with the most smiles was the one full of the folks in the recliners waiting for the completion of their chemo treatment. Maybe it was because these people had hope that their treatment would give them more tomorrows.

Not only does our sovereign Lord not leave us during a time of suffering, He gives us hope for “better tomorrows.” He gives us a course of action, a place to turn---toward Him. The invitation of Hebrews 4:16 is open to all who are in God’s waiting room. "Let us, therefore, come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." If you are there, in a period of waiting, boldy approach the One who is the Giver of grace and mercy. You will find it in your time of need even as you “wait.”

Waiting Delineated

2/9/09 Waiting Delineated
It was 1 month ago today that I first heard the words “biopsy needed.” Thus began this new season/step in my life/dance . From that time on, events became “before MAC or since MAC.” Often there have been periods of one step forward and two steps back---I’m sure there’s a dance move in there somewhere. This dance began with one big “grand jete”---just picture Baryshnikov leaping across the stage---or better yet, picture a ballerina who leaps and is caught by the one waiting patiently and expectantly for her to move toward him. It has been a leap of faith, but I knew who was waiting to catch me---if that makes sense at all. Then there have been the elimination dances (from docs along the way) and reels where things have been so whirling that I wasn’t sure where I was suppose to go next---except that I had a patient dance partner who knew the right steps and was willing to teach me and guide me. Today he began to teach me about waiting---it is “with the heart that we must wait on God.” (A. Murray) Waiting on God is being in His Presence---and I’ve felt so close to Him that it’s as if we’re moving as one---we really are in this dance together.

There’s waiting and then there’s waiting---are you confused yet? I wish I could insert columns here for comparison but don’t think the blog format would like that.
My day started w/ my frailty of “what if” questions taking up way too much space in my mind---I can’t control anything that is going on in Dallas right now--- if indeed, anything is going on that I even need to know about. It ended with today’s Jesus Calling verse on my heart. … I will trust and not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song…(Isa. 12:2)
Journal jottings:
Waiting on DOC ---it’s mental, knowing with the mind---I have no control
1. Seeking doc’s schedule/answer but...... I have no control
2. Restlessness/anxiety/draining
3. In frenzy---making list, checking it twice
4. Responsibility---it’s about “doing
5. Fretting---which overshadows God
6. Eating nervously
7. Expectation w/dread
8. Holding tight to anything I can-----for some semblance of control
Waiting on GOD---it’s a heart issue---believing w/ the heart
1. Seeking his Presence
2. Renewal/rest (Psa. 37:7-- Rest in the Lord, wait patiently on Him.)
3. In faith
4. Relational response---it’s about “being
5. “Fret not_____”verses in Psa. 37----I put my name in the blank.
6. Not eating---intentionally
7. Expectancy w/delight
8. Letting go of all-----but God’s hand
Truly, my soul waiteth upon God. On thee do I wait all the day long. (Psa. 62:1)
