2016: a Year in Review

2016 has been a hard year for many.

Even our nation as a whole has seemed to "suffer" on so many fronts. In fact, thinking back has been more disheartening for me than productive.

Then, I poured my morning cuppa, opened the last page of my devotional book, My Utmost For His Highest and read  Oswald Chamber's answer. (paraphrase is mine)
Anxiety can easily arise from remembering all the yesterdays but as the year ends, one must once again turn with fervor to all that God has in store for her in the future. I need not let my present enjoyment of God's grace be hampered by the memory of my yesterdays with all its blunders and regrets. (sins)

"...But God is the God of our (my) yesterdays..."
"God's hand reaches back to the past and makes a clearing-house for conscience."

Prayer: May God allow my past memories to be an impetus for future spiritual growth as I recall how "insecure"  all of life is, apart from Him. May I not bemoan lost opportunities---remembering "but God," in His love and mercy gave me life in Christ. May I not hastily enter 2017 impulsively or thoughtlessly but may God allow me to let go of my broken, irreversible past.

As  Chambers clearly states it, "Leave the Irreparable Past in His hands, and step out into the Irresistible future with Him. "

Reviewing 2016 gave me much to ponder.....prior to my "resolve" for 2017.

So, after my review,.....what's my resolve?
Maybe the best resolution is NO resolution---at least no resolution apart from Him.

NEW BEGINNINGS

....welcome 2016! The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Or is it???
It seems that I'm always in the midst of a struggle as old years transition to the new ones. This year is no exception. Except....that I'm making NO resolutions.

My hubby and daughter, on the other hand,----along with a friend, a doc and a wise counselor are resolving to "help me" cut back. Maybe it's a reflection of the inner disarray that becomes "outer" when I let down my guard around them.

For a Christian, all new beginnings, in new years or new seasons, start at the cross and continue with obedience to His word.
For me, I want a renewed emphasis in my life on worship. My study in Revelation has been an impetus for that. Loving God and serving others are an overflow of worship..... so, how do I pare down? Relationships take time----time with the Lord and time with others. What a conundrum!
So far, the only fresh start I have made is to begin with a "new" Bible and a new journal. (Thanks, Nancy)

For a journaling junkie, these are essential tools. Maybe the new "journaling" Bible will help me see anew. See truth from Him rather than relying on years of "scribbled notes" (tho marginalia sounds better) in my old Bible. Maybe the new journal will help me keep up with sermon notes and improve my memory and "scattered thinking. "
Yet, the quandary remains---how can there be a "new beginning" when the old ways are so familiar!

RPs

The parking lot was packed at the Germantown Athletic Center this past Friday. Jane Chittick said the drivers were mostly RPs and they would be gone in about 6 weeks.
Not knowing that acronym, I raised a quizzicle eyebrow.

RPs=Resolution People. According to Jane, they are easily recognizable ---wearing all the best togs, especially shoes. The outer display is all "show" and hides the inner lack of perseverance.
First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. (Matt. 23:26)
Resolved---I do not want to be a spiritual RP---I want my insides as clean as my outsides. Inner cleansing with God's word is key, if I am to persevere in my spiritual goal of pleasing Him.

RESOLVED....

I'm not much for New Year's resolutions, apart from spiritual ones. Maybe I don't like the pressure or the failure factor. Possibly it's because I have difficulty "deciding" firmly on a course of action that involves a time deadline.
But....this year I said, "in the presence of family," I think I'll try to learn to use chopsticks in 2015.....so I don't embarrass all of y'all when we eat at an Asian restaurant.
Within "hours" daughter Molly had a "happy" for me.
Kaleidoscope Toys Salida, CO
"A little something to help you with your resolution," she said.

My real resolution should be that I learn to "listen to others" as closely as many of my friends and family members do........so that I can be a "thoughtful gift giver" as each of them are.

JANUARY--- Resolutions or Routines

1/6/11 Though I don’t really make resolutions for the New Year, I do notice a heightened awareness of my dietary concerns, especially my sugar intake. I also notice that there are lots of new people at 24 hr. fitness and realize they could be thinking the same thing about me.

So….without “documented resolutions,” I still know from my “routines” that it’s January when I----

  • Open my new 2011 “At-A-Glance calendar (hubby’s perfect gift) and using my newly sharpened to a razor tip pencil, write in upcoming events on those pristine monthly pages
  • Cut out Lean Cuisine Coupons (using them is always iffy)
  • Dump leftover sweets in trash (though not the really good ones like Carolyn’s fudge)
  • E-mail Ellen about walking
  • Floss more
  • Make mini adjustments to my diet & don’t include Houston’s butter cookies on my Tuesday lunch order (not yet anyway)
  • Smell like grapefruit in the morning----it splatters all over me
  • Read magazine articles on organizing & clearing clutter
  • Start looking for Disciplines of a Beautiful Woman to read, yet again. (1 of only 2 books I reread)

So, you ask---why no resolutions? I know myself---short-term goals are better for me. I tend to “fret” over my unfulfilled resolutions. (i.e. failures) Romans 7:14-20 passage hits the nail on the head in so many ways. Though the passage is about the law & the sin within, there were some verses that really summed it up for me. It’s sort of a spiritual stretch but God does that for me sometimes when He’s showing me my “self.”

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. ……..For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. (Romans 7:15 & 18 b.)
