FAITHFUL FAREWELL

A final farewell full of faith. Such was the funeral of UK's Prince Philip.
From the hymns of truth to the scripture passages from John, Colossians and James, along with the Lord's prayer, all glory was given numerous times to the Lord Jesus Christ!
A funeral full of faith for many to hear. My prayer was just that, "Lord give them ears to hear gospel truth and understand that Jesus is the way the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father but through me"
And all the faithful said, 'Amen" albeit behind their masks.

FRIDAY FUNERAL

Funerals can be a celebration of a life well-lived.
Such was today's funeral of 88 year old Lilly Laughlin!
Lilly, a woman whom I have called friend for 50 years, showed me throughout all those years that God was her refuge. Nearness "to her Lord" was evident to all who knew her as she told of His works and lived a life of faith and fun!
"Her flesh and her heart may have failed but God was the strength of her heart and portion" up until she took her final breath and God received her in to glory. (Psalm 73:24, 26, 28)
Lilly holding hydrangeas, from my daughter Molly's yard, is one of my favorite pictures. Plus, it's in a "Dotsy" frame.

Lilly did not hide her love of the Lord from her descendants; she told her girls and grands and most of us in attendance, many of whom have told their next generation (grands and great grands) of the "praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done," as it says in Psalm 78:4.

This "Friday Funeral" for one of God's faithful was indeed a celebration!

Our loss of sweet Lilly is heaven's gain! Glory be to God.

CHOOSE: TO REMEMBER

The preacher in Ecclesiastes reminds us that there is a time to be born and a time to die. (3:2)

Certainly it seems easier to celebrate births (neighbor, baby Ford---or impending births (Emily and Nathan’s first child due this month as well as Norman and Linda’s grandbaby, Lilly B, due in May) and years of birthdays (Almeda, 101 & Lilly, 88) than to go into houses of mourning. But funerals have outnumbered births these last 6 weeks.

In the last 5 days, two friends have buried their husbands.
The week prior, I attended visitations for daughter of one friend and mother of another friend, both of whom I had worked with in education at Shelby County.

A few weeks before that I mourned with a family, from my hometown, who had come to Memphis for their “Debbie’s” funeral. Not only were we all from Hopkinsville, but the Drurys were former neighbors who had lived around the corner from me on Virginia St. first on Moreland Dr. and then Jimmy and Greta lived on Alumni Moreland.
Just a few days days before, I had attended the funeral for a dad of a former student from Southwind Elementary.
Plus, two encouragers of mine, Carolyn O. from AR and Carolyn F. from MS both “lost” their sister and sister-in-law, respectively.

But God......in His love and mercy (Ephesians 2:4) reminded me to remember. Remember the good times and be grateful that they had chosen to believe.  A lot of grieving and yet much to remember with thankful hearts.
For most it was a relief from physical suffering and a hope for a better life in the Presence of the Lord. So much earthly loss but so much heavenly gain.

Without that, the times of remembering would be difficult. But.....because of their faith choices, my choice to remember was one of celebration!

Celebrating Life

Celebrating life......even in the midst of death.

Last week's funeral of my sweet Aunt Evelyn Davenport was such a service of honor. At age 90, she had continued to serve others, albeit not with the same physical intensity as in earlier years, but continued service all the same. She did not waste time in her final season of life----but chose to continue to minister to others.

It was a time of celebration and affirmation. The morning of the service, as I prayed from John 14:1-3 for both Carl and Joy and the rest of the family, I asked the Lord to give them both comfort and assurance----that they might know Evelyn's heavenly destination was assured. Her faith in the Lord sealed it. Without a doubt. Not because of all the ministry which she had done but because God's word said, " Ye believe in God....and also believe in me.... that where I am, there ye may be also." When the pastor shared some of those verses as well, I felt AFFIRMATION in all caps and I hope they did as well!
Thus, this time of "remembrance".....for one feisty caring and kind lady from the "greatest generation"...... had been an honoring celebration of life.
Evelyn knew the Lord.  She was His beloved daughter.
The officiant and all her friends and family were praising her as a "woman who feared God."

"Her children arose and called her blessed." (Proverbs 31: 28-30)

Quite a celebration.....even though my tears flowed!
