A WAY WITH WORDS!

It is one thing to be a wordsmith.....
but it's much rarer to express one's self in both words and art. EMYO does just that.

What a privilege it was to attend the launch at Dixon Gallery and Gardens last week of her book, Marisol's Dress. It began with a reading by Emily herself with the accompanying Spanish translation as her mom sat in the audience.
The story itself was inspired by her mother's journey from Cuba during the revolution as she fled the communist revolution there with only her abuela, one white dress that twirled and only one doll to a place across the blue ocean where she knew no one and did not even know the language spoken there. She carried her Mama's words in her heart.
Remember you are brave and you are loved.
When lonely in her room in America, Marisol has only white paper and some pencils. A great truth enters her mind.
She realized what she had in front of her was enough for today.
The book encourages all to face hardship with courage....
When life gives you lemons, make paper dolls.
EMYO's book has young readers searching for lemons on every page.

From the large impressionist art works from which the illustrations were drawn to the unique words and phrases included, the book itself is truly a complete  work of art.
Marisol's Dress is so special to me because the book depicts the life of EMYO's mom, a dear, dear friend of mine. It also can inspire others, regardless of the age, to know they are brave and loved in the midst of challenges.

Needless to say, I will pass this treasure on to each of my granddaughters.

Tea and Symphony

Praise the LORD! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens! Praise him for his mighty deeds; praise him according to his excellent greatness! Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe! Praise him with sounding cymbals; praise him with loud clashing cymbals! Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD! (Psalm 150, ESV)
The Memphis Symphony was playing in God's sanctuary at the Dixon Gallery and Garden's Saturday night. (5/10) "Symphony in the Gardens," a bi-annual favorite of mine.
Trumpets and strings and brass and cymbals. Even couples spontaneously dancing, when the MSO Big Band took to the stage playing historic musical scores originally performed and broadcast live by CBS radio from the Peabody Hotel's Skyway ballroom.
.It was all there---even tea. Hot tea at the fancy table set-up, Long Island Iced "Tea-type" drinks at other tables. And hones-TEA at mine, thanks to friend Carolyn F.

Tea and Symphony made for a beautiful evening with friends, under God's sky.
A shout out of thanks to sponsors, Dominion Partners and Brian Kinney!

SABBATH SNAPSHOTS: ARTS IN MEMPHIS

9/30/12 An Artsy Ending To The Month.
From theater in Germantown to Hattieloo in the  Park, statues along a gallery walkway, Symphony in the Gardens (sort of), and school childrens’ word sculptures beneath a flagpole, it’s been a great week for exploring the “arts” in Memphis.

Steel Magnolias at GCT with my T-Cups friends
Hattieloo in the Park---I do so-o-o LOVE Hattieloo, as everyone knows.
My blonde haired grandson loves Hattieloo as well, "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown"
"Have Integrity"---by a young Idlewild Elementary sculptor
Rain didn't dampen the spirits of Memphis Symphony Orchestra's Big Band---we just had to move inside to hear Scott Moore lead the musicians in "Begin the Beguine" and a new rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue"---my parents would have been dancing in the aisles, especially since Scott played the trumpet at our daughter's wedding.

SABBATH SNAPSHOTS: MAGIC OF MEMPHIS

Memphis Botanic Gardens Farmer's Mkt on Wed 2-6 pm
9/23/12 This week, with my eyes intentionally open to find the positive aspects of Memphis, I saw lots of good stuff---in just 3 days. Is it all merely one’s viewpoint?

Certainly negative words tend to run across our newspaper and top the “breaking news” intro on TV----But God…..reminded me that…..
With the blessing of decent people a city is raised up, but by the words of wicked people, it is torn down. (Proverbs:11:11)

So………….here's what I saw in places and people of Memphis in those 3 days.

Pop-up opera all over town for 30 days---Go Opera Memphis!
Art Classes for kids at the Dixon Gallery
Give 365 described in CA as philanthropy for young donors but they welcomed this Medicare gal as well----so many (11) worthy finalists for the "Eye on the Prize" grant money---
