Mis-TEA Med-TEA-tation

This is my comfort in my affliction, That Your word has revived me.
(Psalm 119:50, NASB)

Misty eyes from conviction of unworthiness. An affliction of sorts. An overwhelming need to "feel" God's love. Yet, knowing that I need to trust that He loves me, whether I "feel" it or not.
...feelings are like the mists that cover the mountains in misty weather. The mists pass; the mountains abide.(Edges of His Ways, p. 83) I need to remind myself that my Father God abides with me. He loves me whether I feel it or not. God goes with me wherever I go, whether I feel it or not. (Deuteronomy 31:6)

The King James Version of the Bible says, "Thy Word hath quickened me." Quicken, as a transitive verb, makes alive. To revive; to cheer; to reinvigorate; to refresh by new supplies of comfort or grace.  (King James Version Dictionary) His truth revives me and becomes my feeling of comfort.
I need to sip that cuppa truth daily. Believe it. Then, pour it out to Him as I sing of His love forever.

SABBATH SNAPSHOT : historical reali-TEA

This is NOT a work of fiction. The Zookeeper's Wife by Diane Ackerman is a well-written, non-fiction narrative of the horrors of WWII. Set in Warsaw Poland, the story was taken from the journals of Antonio Zabinski. Antonio and her husband, Ian, were Christian zookeepers, horrified by Nazi racism, yet able to use the Nazi's obsession of rare animals as a way of saving over 300 "doomed" Jews, during a time when even handing a thirsty Jew a cup of water was punishable by death. (p.11)
Holocaust literature, at its best, is a "tough" read but Ackerman, in this poignant story, was able to combine the scholarship of documentation of these atrocities with the kindness and daring of Christians. In an odd way, it was a celebration of life among the dying.
The audio version of the book was the right choice for me. The narrator was excellent with all the Polish names, which added to my understanding. Yet, the documentation "Details" section in the print copy were eye-opening for me!

Even amidst the starving and suffering children who compared their ills, "like old people in a sanitarium," they sang and prayed prayers of thanksgiving. 'Thank you. Merciful Lord, for having arranged to provide flowers with fragrance, glow worms with their glow, and to make the stars in the sky sparkle.' (p. 284)

Definitely not a book for everyone....but following a Friday night dessert at the Sanborn's with Viktor from Cherkassy Ukraine, I saw the frightening similarities of their situation and the ones the Poles had faced. He gave a clear  "political and spiritual climate" update from his country, and I was shocked at how it mirrored my recent reading.

Realities of war stories are not easy reading but....needful, " lest we forget."

"sinceri-TEA"

But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. (2 Corinthians 11:3, NIV)
Clothing oneself in the attributes of God is a worthy pursuit for all mankind. Too many leave these spiritual character traits on the shelf. Like an unwrapped gift, they wait to be opened and experienced in one's own life and then spill over to touch the lives of others.
May today be the day to "open" those spiritual fruits of love, graciousness, goodness, mercy, kindness and sincerity.

Sinceri-TEA. A great cuppa to start the day.

Sincere and pure devotion to Him easily flows through us to others.
A shared cuppa.

"Mortali-TEA"

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; (Ecclesiastes 3: 1-2, KJV)
No, I have not been sipping a cuppa "morbidi-TEA." I've actually been celebrating life with friends. But.....last week's trekking with said comrades, in my same "aging" season, had us exploring some final resting places.

Famous people. War heroes. Pastors. Pets.
Ellen Wilson, wife of the 28th US President, is interred at Myrtle Hill in Rome , GA--a cemetery whose tiers look like a stacked wedding cake, rising out of the dirt. Trust me, the way to the top is precarious, especially for a wide mini-van.
Both known & unknown soldiers.
An elite cemetery in rural AL reserved specifically for the burial of coon dogs. Blood line certification required. Well loved dogs named Ranger, Skid, Squeak and Old Roy are buried here.

Medicare age folks are not like young people, especially teens, who think they are immortal. We know that man is appointed once to die. (Hebrews 9:27) It's not morbid, it's just an awareness. Death is inevitable for mankind---and even their coon dogs. There is nothing that man may do to change or affect this. Such an awareness has each of us carefully choosing how to live.

When sipping a cuppa "mortali-TEA awareness," one begins to discern the essential versus the non-essential in her life! Cemeteries have a way of bringing that thinking to the forefront of ones thoughts.

"Quotabili-TEA"

Let her glean even among the sheaves, and do not reproach her. (Ruth 2:15, NKJV)
Ruth's gleaning was a harvesting---all a part of her plan to obtain food. In Bible Study one often looks for nourishment from God's word in much the same way. Often the truth that sticks is a quip or a pithy grabber that nourishes my memory.

Indulge me in a few snippets of truth taken from my Bible marginalia. Three Bibles in all; NASB, (birthday gift from hubby, 1977) NIV, (Christmas gift from Diane A, 1995) & NKJV. ("Cove" gift from Lo, 11-4-04)

Just my succinct notes that come from others, often not identified, that carry a life message gleaned* from Scripture, & given in user friendly terms, so I clearly "get" the idea!
*Gleaning or extracting information from various sources collected & recorded gradually and bit by bit since 1977 have given me lots of "food for thought."
Pithy with a punch, as I like to say. Messages of wisdom and knowledge with practical applications.
(NASB)
  • There are no atheists in foxholes.
  • Bible is the textbook for relational living. (L. Crabb)
  • Sorry looks back. Worry looks around. Faith looks up. (C. Swindoll)
  • Is it right? (Yes) Should you do it? (Yes) Will you do it? (Probably not) "Probably not" hardens one's heart.
  • When there is sin in our life, God has to work "on us" rather than through us.
  • The "will" can function regardless of the temperature of the heart.
  • We worship our work, work at our play and play at our worship.
(NIV)
  • All want deliverance from hell but few want the deliverance from sin---we clutch the pleasures of it.
  • A little thing is a little thing, but faithfulness in a little thing is a big thing. (Hudson Taylor)
  • Humility is a right estimation of our life (self) toward God and others. (B. Liles)
  • Purpose of prayer is not to change God but to change us.
  • Satan doesn't make you do anything; he just fluffs the pillows.
  • Ether sin will keep you from this book, or this book will keep you from sin. (D.L. Moody?)
(NKJV)
  • Bible is not an answer book---it just leads you to the One who is the Answer.
  • Giving is living the gospel, not just believing the gospel.
  • Growth is the only evidence of life. (Growth is visible.)
  • Hearing is "seeding" for obedience.
  • In fellowship, Jesus is the "fellow" in the ship with you.
  • Prayer is the God-ordained alternative to worry. (C. Swindoll)
No special order for gleanings---just a cuppa quotabili-TEA to sip and share.

"Def-TEA-nition"

A friend is always loyal, and a brother (sister) is born to help in time of need. (Psalm 17:17, NLT)

This pass week has had me experience many kinds of family. None were the family of blood relation, but family all the same!

My long time trekking T-Cup friends with whom I travel once a year. My former university office mate, (UM) who is so MUCH more than a professional friend. My HHS friends who are great for laughter and tears and sometimes both at once.

Like family, they have all been there for me in time of need. During my 2009 cancer journey, they clothed me, fed me, and nursed me. Friends going beyond measure of simple friendship. Becoming family.

Proverbs 18:24 says, "..a real friend sticks closer than a brother." In my life, I'm not sure that's possible because my brothers are my cheerleaders and have always been there for me---but these real friends do the same!

"Flowers are like friends, you get to pick them."
Starla, the young protagonist in Whistling Past the Graveyard, defined family well. "The  people who look out for me. The people I look out for." (p. 308)
I'm grateful God provided me all these beauties ---I got to choose from the best of the bunch! Friends who are like family! A true def-TEA-nition of family, at its best!
"When we consider the blessings of God—the gifts that add beauty and joy to our lives, that enable us to keep going through stretches of boredom and even suffering-friendship is very near the top.
Donald W. McCullough, Mastering Personal Growth

"Maturi-TEA"

"Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity," (Hebrews 6:1, ESV)
Maturi-TEA is a cuppa that requires brewing. For some it takes longer than others. The longer the brew the stronger the tea---the deeper the flavor.
Yesterday's Jesus Calling entry reminds each of us that as God's children we begin our walk with Him by "teething on the truth." But....maturity continues, NOT with independence or self-reliance BUT with dependence on Him. "In the world, dependence is seen as immaturity." (Jesus Calling, 6/24)

But God.....desires our dependence. In the margin of my JC journal, I had written D2D.
Dare 2 Dance!
A reminder to Depend on Him in order to (2) Dance with Him. In '09, I began to dance with the Lord. My depen-DANCE. (Play on word with apologies to my English teacher friends.)
Brothers, do not be children in your thinking.........but in your thinking be mature. (1 Corinthians 4:20)
Mature thinking, like maturi-TEA, requires deep steeping in God's word.

"Hos-pi-tal-i-TEA"

......Practice hospitality. (Romans 12:13, NIV)

Within the realm of Christianity, believers are called to hospitality.
  • Show hospitality to strangers. (Hebrews 13:2)
  • Share with the Lord's people. (Romans 12:13)
  • Include one's family. (1 Timothy 5:8)
  • Don't forsake friends. (Proverbs 27:10)
Some folks seem to have an uncanny ability for making others feel welcome. My Atlanta friends have that knack. Their home becomes my home. I am lavished with hospitality.
How does one know that she has been served a cuppa hospitali-TEA?
She feels loved and special.
And in my case, many "teas" were ready and waiting for my arrival.

Here a cuppa, there a cuppa, everywhere a cuppa cuppa.

SABBATH SNAPSHOT : locali-TEA

A pleasant experience with an author, especially in a series, can have me looking for more of his/her titles. Recalling a place I have visited before, can also be a draw when its the setting of a book. Author Lisa Wingate, author of the Tending Roses series, which I liked,  and the Outer Banks setting were a draw to her book,  The Prayer Box.  (2013)
The  plot was somewhat predictable, but Wingate has a way with words and her books are always "clean." I admit to skimming and scanning at times and though I thought it was predictable, the last chapter offered a surprise. Maybe, during some of my scanning, I missed the foreshadowing...but I did appreciate the unexpected ending.
My "Book Stock"---most from the public or church library.
The Prayer Box can now be returned by this avid "public" patron.
Another extra benefit was the Author End Notes in which Wingate explained the importance of a "prayer box" in a world of fractured thoughts, hurried moments and scattershot prayers--akin to my friend Margie's arrow prayers.  Such a box become a repository for those written down thoughts, both jumbled and clarified. Thoughts of gratitude, petitions, troubles, fears and hopes.
A great reminder to me of such a purpose for "the box."
  • Write them (your prayers) down.
  • Put them (your prayers) in the box.
  • LET. THEM. GO.
That reminder was worth the read. "Let. Them. Go."  Whatever your locale, Outer Banks or home.

"Finali-TEA"

They who dwell in the ends of the earth stand in awe of Your signs; You make the dawn and the sunset shout for joy. (Psalm 65:8, NASB)

There might be sadness when a cuppa finali-TEA is served at day's end knowing friends must depart.
But God reminds us, even in a glorious sunset that even when leaving an area of such beauty, we can all smile because we’ve been there. Together.

"Pi-e-TEA"

"Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; (Matthew 6:1, RSV)

Sweet JoLynn is often on her knees for others. Upstairs out of sight at her prayer bench, the kneeling variety, she communes with the Lord.

Yesterday I watched her read from Bible at the altar in the Frost Chapel on the Berry College campus in Rome, GA. Even in the chapel, she quietly stole away from view and prayed.
Her fingers found and smoothed the tails of the red satin ribbon bookmark, her eyes found the Psalm 119:89-90 passage in the open Bible....."Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.
Your faithfulness endures to all generations;"....

....... and her heart found its way on to prayers for family members who had married at that very altar.

Pi-e-TEA poured out prayerfully.

"Immortali-TEA"

For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. (1 Corinthians 15:53-54)
"The only certainties in life are death and taxes," the old adage states. It is a given fact that the ability to live forever on planet earth is an impossibility---tho some folks live as if there will always be an earthly tomorrow.
Immortality. Written on the rafters of Howard's Chapel for all to see was a great reminder of the only path to eternal life.
Scripture teaches that man's existence is never autonomous but is always dependent on providential support from God for both the "here and now" and the "hereafter."

  • He will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord GOD will wipe tears away from all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth; For the LORD has spoken. (Isaiah 25:8)
  • And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. (1 John 5:11-12)
  • ...Yet God does not take away life, but plans ways so that the banished one will not be cast out from Him. (2 Samuel 14:4)

But God, through his Son has provided immortality to all who believe.

A cuppa immortali-TEA poured out through His Son for all who will partake of His truth. How grateful I am for this cuppa.

"Felici-TEA"

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:.....a time to laugh; (Ecclesiastes 3: 1, 4, KJV)

Laughter lightens your load and lifts your heart.....(Jesus Calling 6/17)
Laughter is a powerful antidote for stress, anxiety, pain, and sadness.
Sometimes getting away with friends can provide that by-product of felicity known as laughter.
Laughter, an over flow of a close friendship, is good for the soul and blesses even the on-lookers, because laughter is contagious!
Pleasing and well chosen....cuppa of felici-TEA, poured out to friends.

"TEA-rip" with friends

I have called you friends, (John 15:15, NIV)

Our annual T-cup trip begins today. Destination unknown---until the BIG reveal later....after our sweet treat and joint tea---whatever joint tea is.
It doesn't really matter where we are going. We're just going as friends on a "girls' get-a-way." And of course we'll probably have tea somewhere along the way.

The BIG plus of this T-cup TEA-rip is that we are not only "girlfriends" at a similar season in life, but we are friends in the faith.
That means Jesus goes along for the ride.

"vitali-TEA"

Righteous Father,......I know you, and..... I have made you known.... and will continue to make you known....(John 17:25-26, NIV)
John 17:25-26 are the words of Jesus but they also reflect the hearts of believers who want to thrive in their lives as God's children. Living a life of vitality in Him that others might get a glimpse of Him as we strive to "know Him and make Him known." A simple creed with a big message.

More than alive. Thriving. A life of vitality.

"Thrive," a Casting Crowns "big camp" praise song, was written "using the idea of Psalm One in showing them (students) what a believer looks like."
"Like a tree panted by the water, we will never run dry."
He put you here to thrive, to dig in and to reach out and this record (song) is an effort to draw a picture of what a believer, a follower of Jesus, would look like if they dug into their roots and understood God and themselves more.”  (Mark Hall, lead vocalist/Casting Crowns)l
Fill our hearts and flood our souls with one desire,                            Just to know You and to make You known.

Joy unspeakable...
Faith unsinkable...
Love unstoppable, ("Thrive")
A cuppa "vitali-TEA" is filled with; unspeakable joy, unsinkable faith, & unstoppable love.  Drink deeply if you desire to thrive in life.

Sabbath Snapshot : paterni-TEA

Until memories of Daddy flooded me as I was driving home this Father's Day, I had planned to do a non-fiction book review. But, somehow it didn't pan out. I didn't have the wherewith all to share a deep book based on the spiritual and political turmoil of Poland during WWII. My feelings needed refreshing instead.

I'm not the only one who has buried his/her dad. Some have never know their father or have never married and lived alongside the father of their children. K-Love suggested that everyone has some male in their life whom they could thank for mentoring them (at church, in scouts or a friend's dad) and coming alongside with encouragement and words of wisdom.
So, when I got home I picked up a "Father Tim" book and did a thumb-thru re-read. In the fictional "Mitford series" this small town rector became a mentor for many and a surrogate father as well. This simple book is one to peruse at leisure---no plot, just meaningful quotes that he might have collected in his years of ministry.
Patches of Godlight by Jan Karon is subtitled, Father Tim's Favorite Quotes. Although the book is without page numbers, the listings are somewhat random and there is no topical index, it worked for my mood today. Even the handwriting and old-timey typewritten varieties of entries were appealing to me. Sometimes that's all one needs when her heart is feeling heavy---some pithy reminders of goodness. Plus, there's a teacup on the cover----always a draw for this reader/reviewer.
A few gems from Father Tim's notes:

  •  Faith goes up the stairs that love has built and looks out the window which hope has opened. (Charles Haddon Spurgeon)
  • If you believe what you like in the gospels, and reject what you don't like, it is not the gospel you believe, but yourself. (St. Augustine)
  • It is only the words, "Our Father," which make the prayer bearable. If God is indeed something like a father, then, as something like children, maybe we can risk approaching Him....(Frederick Buechner)
  • You can't get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. (C.S. Lewis)
  • You can not do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
  • He is your friend who pushes you nearer to God. (Abraham Kuyper, 1837-1920)
  • Where is human nature so weak as in a bookstore? (Henry Ward Beecher, 1813-1887) Where indeed?!!!

"Gra-mma-TEA-cally Correct"

That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, (Romans 4:16, ESV)
Faith is a noun. But gems from today's Streams in the Desert entry (6/14) reminded me that true faith is supported and revealed by verbs.
Action verbs. Verbs expressing what can be done. Often, an outward manifestation of an inner belief.

If faith is the "subject" of one's life, then it is the "thing" that is doing the action. The one receiving the benefits of the action, is the object of said faith.
Faith...
  • ...links one to a Holy God.
  • ...clothes one with the power of Jehovah.
  • ...insures one of God's attributes.
  • ...defies the hosts of hell.
  • ...cause one to triumph over enemies.
Faith allows and encourages the communication between us and God......the prayer road between soul and heaven.
A single life of faith can reveal to someone in pursuit of God, the world's most powerful truth. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Him. (John 14:6)

Faith honors God. God honors faith. (Streams, p. 233)
A gra-mma-TEA-cally correct cuppa is a complete cuppa faith that spills over and touches many others for Christ's sake and His glory.

"mo-TEA-ley" cuppa

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,...(Romans 8:28, KJV)

My jigsaw puzzle working friend, JoLynn, finds joy in looking at the mishmash of colors and motley/dissimilar shapes which have been dumped out of a 1,000 piece puzzle box. She knows that they are all part of a bigger picture----which she doesn't even choose to see ahead of time. She allows the pieces to "work together" to form the picture. (I recommend "Zuplez" 4/9/09 blog entry for a more complete explanation of her unique ability)

Scrabble expert friend, Ann, has a similar approach to all those tiles that tumble out of the maroon velvet bag. As she selects her "unseen" 7 tiles for her tray, she has an uncanny way of perceiving the longer words or the  higher scoring short ones. She takes what is dealt her and begins looking for only the tiles that are needed exchanges. I want to turn them all in for a fresh start. I can't "see" the possibilities. She sees multiple possibilities. Her technique is the winner. At least, I've never won against her.
Sadly, I often approach life seeing only the pieces, the broken pieces---a hodgepodge of events..... and not factoring in the Lord and His bigger picture for me until later. My desire is  to "pray my way out" of the "pieces and tiles" that are uncomfortable or hurtful.

For many of us, daily events appear to pour out pieces of life that are stressful, troublesome, disappointing even. Yet, these troubles can be used by God to teach us important life lessons. Where we see stress, He sees opportunities. Unexpected crisis are a part of life---at least in the Liles household. But.....a crisis for any of us can be used, by the Lord, as a lesson for growth and betterment in our lives.

Intentional practice is needed to see problems as learning opportunities. Opportunities waiting to be solved in His timing. If one doesn't focus on seeing God's hand or begin quickly praying and asking to see God's hand, then problems can overwhelm and negatively consume one's thought life.

Look for the bigger picture. Exchange all those disjointed and disappointing mo-TEA-ley, miscellaneous pieces of life for His all encompassing peace. Remember to thank the Lord in everything and to ask Him to clearly show the life lessons He has in each piece.

Each piece of one's life exchanged for His purpose = His peace.

The Lord will bless His people with peace. (Psalm 29:11)
A mo-TEA-ley cuppa needs to be sweetened with God's peace.

Wil-TEA : a tuneful cuppa

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.(Isaiah 40:8, ESV)

Lately, for a variety of reasons, I have been very much aware of being in the withering, wil-TEA season of life. Scripture presents many rich "comparative" figures of speech to describe this season of brevity, especially when compared to eternity.
  • Swifter than a weaver's shuttle (Job 7:6)
  • Days on earth are like a shadow & wither away like grass. (1 Chronicles 29:13 and Psalm 102:11)
  • A vapor...for awhile...then vanishes. (James 4:14)
But, for aging believers, that knowledge is not without hope.

These thoughts were whirring. K-Love was playing. Owen piped up---I like that song, Shug.

I like that song as well----especially the verse that reminds me of how fleeting my life is. Such a verse reminds me to make the most of my moments----especially relational moments. It reminds me that God is still with me during this season, watching out for  me, and telling me that I am His.
Not because of anything this "wilty gal has done, but because of who He is and what He has done on my behalf. Therein lies eternal hope.
I am a flower quickly fading,  Here today and gone tomorrow. A wave tossed in the ocean. A vapor in the wind.Still you hear me calling.Lord, You catch me when I'm falling. And you've told me who I am.
I am yours.
Not because of who I am But because of what You've done. Not because of what I've done. But because of who You are. (Casting Crowns)
Listen to this tune, especially if you're feeling wil-TEA, and renew your hope.

"Wil-TEA"

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. (Psalm 42:1. NIV)

Not only does a deer long for water, so does my forsythia!

Desiring a big POP of yellow sunshine at the end of the driveway, I planted a forsythia. Nothing "pops" YELLOW in a landscape quite like this bush.
According to Mother, a forsythia requires sunshine and lots of room to spread as  it grows---"don't contain or shape it, Dotsy. Let it shape itself." Words from long ago that still ring in my head.
Before God sent the rain, I, and hubby, watered it faithfully, or so we thought. It still looked wil-TEA to us----like it needed a big cuppa fresh water. Even my "master gardener neighbor," Lynda used my same term. "Your forsythia really is looking mighty wilty."

Then, the rains came.

Washed by water from the heavens, my forsythia perked up.
I feel the same way when I've been "washed with water (from God) through the word." (Ephesians 5:26)
Cleansed. Refreshed. Perked up.

That's why one's wilting soul "pants" after the Living Water. The One who offers the drink of living water assures us that when we drink deeply, we will never thirst again. (John 4:14)

No more wilting for those who drink from His cuppa.

"De-i-TEA" choice

Thou shalt have no other gods before me. (Exodus 2:3, KJV)

Worshipping a false God in our culture is nothing as easily recognizable as a graven image. (Exodus 2:4) The counterfeit gods of our culture are those more subtle ones that we bow down to with our time, our job and our checkbooks. It's the gods of achievement and perfection, even pleasure. It's the gods we serve. The gods we rely on. The gods we think we need for fulfillment.

A relatively new thought to me was the god of knowledge.
TMI. Instant gratification. Answers at our fingertips. Just a click away.
Could google be a god? Some scholars think it contributes to the "god of self." Because who doesn't want to "know it all" or at least appear to have knowledge.
Remember Eve in the Garden of Eden? She succumbed to "her desire" for obtaining wisdom by disobeying God.  (Genesis 3:6)

Any of our cultural gods that replace God as our center of attention and have come front and center in our pursuit of fulfillment is an IDOL. Not graven, but an idol all the same.
It's important to choose the One true God. The God of Scripture who offers a cuppa HIs De-i-TEA for every aspect of our lives. Let's "sip" to that!

***Thanks to Jan C. and her Summer Refreshment class who has had my mind clicking about "counterfeit gods" in my life. So eye-opening.....and convicting.

"Puri-TEA" of Faith

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:27, KJV)

Many world faiths "do good." It's their version of "doing good," as well as their motive, that can bring the validity of such faith in to question, at least for me. Suicide bombers purport to be acting our their faith. But to what purpose? And to whose benefit?
Therefore, puri-TEA of pure faith is a cuppa poured out for the benefit of others.....the least of these. Orphans. Widows.
Puri-TEA of faith is acceptable to God. For the glory of God---not for fame and glory for self.
In the Christian faith, purity goes beyond this action of service to others, to keeping oneself pure, not soiled and dirty from the mores/morals of the culture.
Unstained. Unblemished. Spotless.
May I wait each day for God's purpose and motives in order to fill my empty cuppa with "puri-TEA of faith."

SABBATH SNAPSHOT : harsh reali-TEA

Yes, I have read The Tilted World. (CA Viewpoint, 6/8) Beth Ann Fennelly, is co-author. A prize-winning poet, as well, I first heard Fennelly read from her book, Great with Child: Letters to a Young Mother, at the “ Southern Festival of Books“ in the fall of 2006.
I've always liked books of letters and diaries and the topic was certainly apropos as daughter, Molly was pregnant at the time.  It inspired me to write (still unfinished) “Letters to my Molly” to chronicle her pregnancy, interspersed with memories of my own pregnancy with her.

Fennelly’s latest book, co-authored with her husband, and set against the 1927 flood of the Mississippi, was a story of abuse and murder and tthe historical info was well documented, I did not review it on this blog because the  story, though in many ways tender, had a “roughness” to it. Yet, I’m glad I read it---well written and historically rich in an area close to home.
Just this week, I read Whistling Past the Graveyard by Susan Crandall, a story told from the point of view of 9 year old Starla that takes place during the summer of 1963, a very familiar time frame to me.
Describing herself as having “more sass than sense” with a “mouth that wandered off more than it stayed home,” Starla ends up on a trek with Eula, a black woman with a white baby. Eula, who called Starla a “blessing” when  no on else ever had. (p. 141) Starla began to show gratitude, using Eula’s  words, “Thank you baby Jesus.” (p.257)
There’s good and bad portrayal of folks of faith. Sadly, that’s still a reali-TEA of life today.

Heartwarming and tender around the edges, but rough as well. A roughness indicative of the time.

Readers who liked Saving CeeCee Honeycutt would probably like this one as well.
This Starla quote explains the book’s title as well as giving one a taste of her dialect.
My daddy says that when you do somethin' to distract you from your worstest fears, it's like whistlin' past the graveyard. You know, making a racket to keep the scaredness and the ghosts away. He says that's how we get by sometimes. But it's not weak, like hidin'... It's strong. It means you're able to go on.
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER:
Books reviewed by me are not always recommendations! Just because there is a picture or a quote, that does NOT indicate a recommendation---with, or without reservation.

So-o-o to many readers, who are interested in a book mentioned, but not necessarily recommended, leave a comment, email or call---I can give more info and then you can decide for yourself.

SWEET TEA OF Biblical Authori-TEA

...For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. (Romans 13:1, NIV)
Some things make me glad to be "Southern." Friendly folks, wraparound porches, familiar drawls, fried crappie and sweet tea.
Lots of "sweet teas" in my life, (joyous things, even seemingly "tuff" ones)---and a recent USA Today snapshot reminded me of another one. In terms of "Bible-mindness," a recent poll showed that the highest percentage of folks who had read the Bible and believed strongly in its accuracy, reside comfortably close to me, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Count me among them.

"Selectivi-TEA"

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3, NIV)
Many a couple struggles with selective hearing "chosen" by their spouse, though most often men get the blame. Mention the opera or a conversation with a friend and he is tuned out but mention football stats or golf scores and "he" is all ears! It goes both ways---but for either, it's an action when one chooses to focus his/her attention on a specific source of a sound (think...spouse vs TV) or the spoken words themselves.
Selective hearing is a euphemism for listening to only what one wants to hear.

Some of us sip from this cuppa of selectivi-TEA when we read our Bibles. Even being aware that ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable.....(2 Timothy, 3:16, emphasis mine), one can still pick and choose the truths he/she wants to heed. Some even hop from church to church or tele-evangelist to tele-evangelist til they find the prosperi-TEA gospel they want to hear. In our culture, there's always a "teacher/preacher" ready to tickle your ears so that you "feel good"----because they say what you want to hear.

The selective hearer only ever hears within their own frame of reference.

Ask yourself, "Am I hearing what God is saying and wants me to hear....or is self my frame of reference?"

Selectivi-TEA of truth is a choice each must make on his own.

lis-TEA-ning

And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: (Mark 4:24, KJV)
Yesterday's Commercial Appeal comic strip was so "right on" for my recent ponderings.
ZITS COMICS
When it comes to listening, whose voice am I choosing? Where is my aural focus? God or self?

When God speaks, am I hearing as to heed or am I only 1/2 listening----hearing the parts I like?? That's similar to Jeremy, the 15 yr old Zits' character, who will only listen to those things he wants to hear.

So many voices in life's cuppas....choosing the right cuppa lis-TEA-ning is important.

"insecuri-TEA"

What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight: what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roof-tops. (Matthew 10:27, NIV)

Sometimes, God gives me blog ideas in the night. Sometimes I easlily recall them the next day. Sometimes I don't. Sometimes I write them down, Most times I don't. Normally, I don't tell of these infrequent occurrences. It feels embarrassing. It might sound self-righteous. What would others think? Would I sound like a mystic?

I'm not a mystic. I'm ordinary.  I don't hear an audible voice---but God still "speaks to me." An impression. A sense. A middle of the night idea. A struggle. A serendipitous circumstance. A check in my spirit. A deep longing that fills my heart.

I hear from God by reading His word. Even a single verse.

Today's verse, which I had also embedded in a '09 cancer journey blog, spoke to me in a different way, But God used it then, as now. Same verse different lesson.

But....speaking "it" (that I hear from God) and proclaiming "it" (from the rooftops) does not come easily. I need to rid myself of this cuppa insecuri-TEA so that God can use me as He sees fit.

So here's today's SHOUT-OUT----God speaks to me. I can't explain it....
but God does speak. I have lots of "But God" moments in my life---this is just one of them.

"jit-TEA-ry"

And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. (1 Kings 19:12, KJV)
Growing up at 2211, we were always told to "turn out the light" when we left the room. Or asked, "Did you turn off the light?" Mainly, the concern was payment of the light bill from Pennyrile Electric that prompted these remarks.

These days one needs to turn the "off switch" in order to have the light. Light from the One who is the Light.
Our lives could do with a little dimming of extraneous stimuli. Away from the bombardment of visual and auditory distractions.Turning off digital devices alone could afford one a little less noise and commotion, making life a little less jittery----but a lot calmer.
Disconnecting digitally. Connecting spiritually.

If we don't intentionally create these quiet times, we can get caught up in all the wrong "hoopla" that will beckon us at every turn. Hoopla that is NOT from the Lord.
The de-caf shelf in my pantry where one can find "jitter free" tea.
We need to "de-caf" our life cuppa, just a bit, if we want to enjoy times of peace and restoration at His feet. It's only when one's away from the ji-TEA-ry influences and sensations that one is then able to hear His still small voice.

"mul-TEA-ply"

When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul. (Psalm 94:19, NASB)
Insomnia seems to "reign" lately---at least on my side of the bed. So....whether I am awakened by an extreme warmth (aka a flash) or an "urge" which has me trekking to the loo. (aka the toilet) It's during these early am awake times that worry seems to reset my metabolism from the calm I desire in sleep to the racing of whirring thoughts. If our minds have a metabolism, anxious thoughts upstart mine toward mach speed during the night watches. Obviously, the Psalm 94:19 verse is a "go-to" verse for me as I have embedded it in 4 previous blogs.* But today, it's front and center!

The question asked by hubby prior to bedtime came to the forefront of my mind.....and sleep eluded me for another couple of hours.
"Why do you have to blog every day? Maybe when you go on your girls' trip you could blog that you're taking off for a few days."
In recent years, I have never sensed such a "daily" compulsion. Would it be acceptable to no longer adhere to this semblance of a commitment? But God.....Isn't my love for Him the compelling factor? If not, then why am I doing it?

Struggling to crawl out of bed to be on time for an 8:30 appointment, I had doubts. No middle of the night blog ideas came. No "tea" words on the edges of my mind. No energy for the day seemed evident and that was even without factoring in a blog entry. But God............

Leaving point A at 9:25 am to get to point B by 9:30 am, I passed a table, with a "tented" brown leather book. As a librarian, dog-earing a page, or "tenting a book" to hold one's place is a no-no! So, I backtracked. I picked up the book, Jesus Calling by Sarah Young which was holding a place for today's date. There was my "tea" word and that one word was an affirmation for me-----today I was to blog......"mul-TEA-ply."
The Pharisees chose to "multiply" regulations to create their own form of godliness and lost sight of God. (Jesus Calling, 6/2) Even today man-made rules can enslave each of us when one's focus is on performance and not on knowing God.

For Christian bloggers, a worthy goal is to "shed the love of God abroad in our hearts " (Romans 5:5) that His word might spread and his disciples multiply and become obedient in the faith. (Acts 6:7) and For God's sake. His glory, not our own.

Several cuppas of mul-TEA-ply are available:

  • A pharisaical form of multiplying that focuses on "self."
  • A God focused multiplying that brings Him glory.

I hope to choose the right brew so that "whatever I do in word or deed will be done in His name and to His glory." (Colossians 3:17) Today I chose to focus on Him and He led me to blog.
