❓?⁇ ᥅ ⸮︖ ❓

12/2/2026
What is "THE" question for 2026?
I'm still in the "consideration" mode?

What "one" word will be a "lamp unto my feet and a LIGHT unto my path? (Psalm 119:105, emphasis mine) What "one" word will guide me to live by every word that comes from the mouth of God? (Matthew 4:4)
His word is truth! (John 17:7) Breathed out by God. (2 Timothy 3:16)

The question remains.....What Is My One Word ❓?⁇ ᥅ ⸮︖ ❓

DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?

Do you hear what I hear?

Probably not.
We might have heard the same word or same big booming sound.......but then we add our own experiences to the word or event and each heart hears or pays attention somewhat differently.

For me, that's the way God's word is. As I read it, I ask Him to speak uniquely to me.
Passages take on meaning that go directly to my heart. Maybe that's why there are different versions and commentaries on the same passages of Scripture. (2 Timothy 3:16) Even the same passage can take on new meaning as I refocus on it during a different season of life.
Sometimes God's word whispers to me through the Psalms. Other times God's word SHOUTS to me as in 2 Chronicles 2:20.

I want my heart to hear God's heart.

TEA-lightfully clear

God's Word is truth. (John 17:17) God-breathed. (2 Timothy 3:16) Yet, to many, parts of scripture are unclear. Direction needed. Crystal clear direction. Clarity in God's word
Isn't that what we all want? A cup of clari-TEA as we read God's word---to know His truth?
To know what God is really saying, especially to each of us personally?
Last week at BSF, Cathy, our teaching leader, gave insight into this conundrum.
All scripture is equally true....BUT not all scripture is equally clear.
A TEA-lightful quote for me to remind me of truth that I do understand and to trust the Lord in the parts which I don't.

"TEA-raining"

Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. (2 Timothy 4:2, NIV)

When I teach, I can go to preaching so this verse seems appropriate for today as I go to share with the St. Luke's Methodist Day School Teachers.
What a privilege. What a responsibility!

Kids count---a lot. Teaching counts---a lot. My words need to count---a lot.

Words to be useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, (2 Timothy 3:16)
A cuppa "TEA-raining" served in my sheep mug and tempered with responsibili-TEA, as I go forth to feed His sheep, to those who will be tending His lambs. What a privilege. What a BIG responsibility!
LILES LEARNINGS FROM THE TRENCHES OF PRE-SCHOOL
(nothing earth-shattering, just observations)
  • ·      Don’t rob a child of his childhood.
  • ·      Allow children to think outside the box.
  • ·      Allow children to color outside the lines or create their own lines.
  • ·      First impressions have lasting significance.
  • ·      Never do anything for a child that he can do or learn to do (with developmentally appropriate guidance) on his own.
  • ·      Separate and simplify. (Break down into doable steps.)
  • ·      Train the eye, at an early age, for the reading experience.
  • ·      Without comprehension there is no reading.
  • ·      The more one reads (or is read to) the more one knows when he reads.
  • ·      Don’t stop reading aloud. Pass it on, even at home.
  • ·      It does matter what one reads.

elemen-TEA-ry

He has told you, O man, what is good;

and what does the Lord require of you

but to do justice, and to love kindness,

and to walk humbly with your God? Micah 6:8, ESV)

Hubby and I are both Sherlock Holmes fans. We don't belong to the Baker Street Irregulars nor do we don deerstalker hats to celebrate His possible birthday of January 6. After all he is a fictional character. But....we appreciates both the written and television works based on his detection skills. BBC/PBS is filmed in London. The locale is familiar. The acting incredible. Even the CBS contemporary update, set primarily in NYC is enjoyable. Plus, Watson is a female. A novel approach.
Film and TV productions have used the Holmes line, which he uttered to Watson, that is recognized by anyone over 60. "Elementary, my dear Watson."

Elementary. The obvious. The basics. Simple truths. Recognizable by those truly seeking. Foundational for deduction and spiritual understanding.

All this to say, that in the Christian faith, there are some elementary truths that all denominations hang their hats on.
My favorite "BASIC" verses (emphasis, mine):
  • You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. (Deuteronomy 6:5-7)
  • Serve the Lord with gladness. (Psalm 100:2)
  • You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and (love) your neighbor as yourself. (Luke 10:27)
  • Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. (John 6:47)
  • Serve one another in love. (Galatians 5:3)
  • Pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
  • In everything give thanks....(1 Thessalonians 5:18)
  • All scripture is given by inspiration of God...(2 Timothy 3:16)

Just the basics---elementary truths. A cuppa elemen-TEA-ry sweetened with God's truths which Christians should sip every day.

"Selectivi-TEA"

For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3, NIV)
Many a couple struggles with selective hearing "chosen" by their spouse, though most often men get the blame. Mention the opera or a conversation with a friend and he is tuned out but mention football stats or golf scores and "he" is all ears! It goes both ways---but for either, it's an action when one chooses to focus his/her attention on a specific source of a sound (think...spouse vs TV) or the spoken words themselves.
Selective hearing is a euphemism for listening to only what one wants to hear.

Some of us sip from this cuppa of selectivi-TEA when we read our Bibles. Even being aware that ALL scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable.....(2 Timothy, 3:16, emphasis mine), one can still pick and choose the truths he/she wants to heed. Some even hop from church to church or tele-evangelist to tele-evangelist til they find the prosperi-TEA gospel they want to hear. In our culture, there's always a "teacher/preacher" ready to tickle your ears so that you "feel good"----because they say what you want to hear.

The selective hearer only ever hears within their own frame of reference.

Ask yourself, "Am I hearing what God is saying and wants me to hear....or is self my frame of reference?"

Selectivi-TEA of truth is a choice each must make on his own.

"perspicui-TEA"

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105, NIV)
Until a recent Allen Bible Church sermon, (5/11), I had used the word perspicui-TEA incorrectly. I even documented its use in my Bible years ago as I heard it from a former pastor. Obviously, I heard it incorrectly since clarity of truth is the hallmark of perspicuity in scripture. God's truth has no opacity when spiritually discerned by the Holy Spirit. God's Spirit gives clarity and understanding of scripture.
Clearly, God's word is infallible, even when I don't fully understand it. (2 Timothy 3:16) Living out (obedience) what I do know and do understand, allows me to continue to grow in knowledge of Him. I want my faith to be perspicuous in my life.
It is God's word that gives lucidity to my life of faith.
It's why I use God's word as a filter to my thoughts and interpretations of scripture.
A cuppa perspicui-TEA---
May I sit under God's Word and its veracity, imparted by the Spirit of  Truth.
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” (C.S. Lewis)

Lucidi-TEA is key in studying God's Word. Therefore my "Tea with Thee" times start with a request for a cuppa  perspicui-TEA of spiritual wisdom to be served by my spiritual teacher.

"TEA-ology"

The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us do what is right. (2 Timothy 3:16,CEV)
My play on "tea" words is just a technique to give this old lady something to hang her "memory hat" on, as recall seems to be getting harder each year. But, in no way is it to diminish the truth and authority of God's word. My tea-ology is all about the One who is the authority in my life.
Authori-TEA is the first cuppa one needs to be served when seeking truth. The Bible is the authoritative word of God. Solid understanding of spiritual authority is vital to building one's faith.
These days we live in a culture of "nothority." No one wants to be told how to live. There is no right and wrong in our culture----only shades of gray. Why would one listen to a "do what's right" lecture when, in his view, he's not doing anything wrong.
"A time of half-truths and hidden agendas. (Michele Phoenix.com, 12/30/13) Not my cup of tea.
As I savor His word during my "Tea With Thee" time, may I strengthen my brew by continually adding more of His truth to my cuppa tea-ology.

The Quest

1/30/13 Most of us are on a quest of some kind.
Recently, I’ve been on a physical quest. I’ve been in pursuit of healing coupled with answers to all kinds of medical questions. In this endeavor, I have discovered that such a pursuit needs to be intentional. Not only is the right equipment required, but it is also crucial to have a guide, close at hand, to help execute the exercises correctly. The PT knows what’s best for each individual. He’s read the text. He understands the best way for me to attain my intended purpose. He knows why I am there!
Equipment for physical health

As I’m studying to teach Ecclesiastes, I am clearly seeing that my spiritual pursuit needs to handled in much the same way as my physical one. No plop and drop method with my Bible---- hoping for the right verse to jump out----but an intentional study of God’s Word. Along with the Bible there’s other material to equip me and to help me better understand the teaching therein. Great strengthening comes from my daily exercise of being in His word. But it is also crucial that I am guided in this pursuit by the One who understands the text. Therefore, I pray for guidance from the One who fully understands the words because that One inspired the text.

Equipment to aid spiritual health
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness; (2 Timothy 3:16)
My quest, in both instances, is to lean not to my own understanding (Proverbs 3:5) but to trust the ones who truly know to guide me in my pursuits.

CUT AND PASTE DOCTRINE

1/9/13 Until this past Sunday’s sermon, (1/13/13) I had never heard of a Thomas Jefferson Bible. According to our pastor, Jefferson created his own gospel theology by removing from his own Bible the parts he didn’t agree with, especially the “miracles.” He obviously used something sharp, maybe scissors, to cut out parts he didn’t agree with and just pasted them on blank paper. It was a pasting up his own account of Christ’s philosophy. Jefferson's own cut and paste theology. It allowed God’s Word to fit Jefferson’s own inclinations. If it didn’t fit, out it went.

As you read with mouth agape, don’t lord yourself as “holier than thou” over Mr. Jefferson. Instead, ask your self how many times you, too, have wanted to “pick and choose” the parts of the Bible that you agree with and then dismiss all the rest.

Jefferson’s version created a God who would never do what Jefferson could not explain, such as a miracle. His cut and paste gave him a god who would not say “no” to Jefferson’s own wants and will.

A cut and paste god is NOT as big as the one true God of the one true Bible. (Psalm 33:4)

Games

4/7/09 Games of Life
Our family has an affinity for games, especially word games. These games are often most enjoyed not because of the ease or fun but rather because of the challenge. There is also the competitive element that can enter into the fun----though that is not my preferred part. In most of our favorite games, there seems to be somewhat of a joy in the hardship of figuring things out. It's always done in the context of the rules but when resolution finally occurs, we all appreciate the challenge.

We can make a game out of anything. Traditionally, the night before the first day of school, all three of our kids would have to find their school supplies by following the clues for the “hunt.” Recently, when Josh and Molly were in Dallas for my surgery, they created a similar scavenger/treasure hunt for Buddy’s boys. They too loved the challenge and worked together for the to expedite the "find."

Each summer at the beach we “Boggle” or “Scrabble” at night with our old standby favorites or sometimes we add a new game to our repertoire. In the mornings, we spend time with our pseudo friend, Will Shortz. Though we wouldn’t know his face, we know his style. The Liles wordsmiths begin the day, with coffee or tea in hand, huddled around his New York Times crossword puzzle. Pencils in hand as well. Always pencils because Mr. Shortz is a master of clues. A clue once listed for confident was “one who works this with a pen.” We could never do that with one of his puzzles.

We are sticklers for rules in the games we play---we all have to be on the same page. Many a fray has resulted in croquet matches or Scrabble games so we pack the rules and the crossword and Scrabble dictionaries right alongside the swimsuits. That’s why daily crosswords are good---you can’t “cheat” by looking in the back.

Rules are good. God has given us rules for life in His Word.
2 Timothy 3:16 says, All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
His rules allow us to live fulfilled lives.
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15) Just as word handling is important in board games, it’s extremely important with His word.
Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 1:13) God provides the trump card that enables us to do it---His grace.
Playing by God’s rules doesn’t take away anything from the game/dance of life, it adds meaning and purpose to it---that sense of accomplishment that comes from a life well lived. By His rules, for His glory. Don’t cheat yourself by trying to shortcut God’s plan----living life your way is your game, not His.

I usually take the CA crossword puzzle to bed with me at night. Worries from the day seem to take a backseat when I’m trying to solve “one across and one down.” Similarly, life’s big concerns dissipate when I’m focused on the cross---that vertical relationship with Him and that horizontal relationship with others.

Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed.
(1 Timothy 6:18-19) That "life indeed" is a life of abunDANCE with him now and forever--when our time on earth blinks, “GAME OVER.”
