HUMILITY IN PRACTICE!!

Humility. Without pride, Lowly. Meek. Gentle.
Recently, I came across a NT analogy of humility. It seemed to truly represent the  characteristic of thinking of others more important than oneself and translating those thoughts into action. "Tie on the servant's apron."

The staff at First Evangelical Church does it well! Quite literally!

We can choose to do it too.
Begin each day with your apron at hand.
Tie on your servant attitude as you sip your morning cuppa humili-TEA!

CLOTHED IN HUMILITY!

Clothed in humility. What does that look like in today's world?
Is it so rare, one is shocked when they see it?

How does one ...accept situations as humbling as a "pie in the face?"
Regardless of the approach??????
How does one ...tie on the servant's apron, as ταπεινότητα, the Greek word for humility indicates?
Humility is the "tea" of our souls which nourishes and enriches others!

Humility....a choice of all Christians who desire to serve others!
This group earned a big cuppa humility-TEA---make that 2 cuppas!

CHOOSE: TO SEE

Choose to see what's right before your eyes even if it's in an unusual place in the morning paper.
How blessed we are to have a newspaper that still print's God's word----at least it did today!
Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life. (Proverbs 22:4)
One thing for sure, humility is at the opposite end of the self-promoting spectrum and today's verse said absolutely nothing about fame, power or stock market portfolio.

I think a cuppa humil-TEA will go well with today's Bible verse in the Commercial Appeal.
May I choose to ponder what I have seen in print this morning.

Holiday Humili-TEA

Humili-TEA---a great cuppa to serve for the holiday.
Humility is the "tea" of our souls which nourishes and enriches others.
Humili-TEA, anytime of year is a great cuppa to serve others but especially during the Christmas Season as it personifies our Savior.

TEA WITH THEE : a TEA-sentation

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33, ESV)

TEA-sentation might be a bit of a s-t-r-e-t-c-h but what else would you call a presentation about taking tea as part of one's quiet time. He Cares, a special ministry of First Evangelical Church, is designed to meet the needs of our homebound seniors as well as giving care givers a break. As always, the "senior" audience, some who are younger than yours truly, was gracious as I sought to encourage them during their worship time.
TEA-sentation set-up
I'm sure that I left them with "tea" words whirring in their heads but hopefully they realized the importance of daily time with the Lord. Seeking Him first. Allowing Him to fill their "cuppa." Otherwise, the "world will fill their life's cuppa.

The world often pours out---stressors of anxi-TEA, feelings of inferiori-TEA, negativi-TEA and hoi-TEA, Toi-TEA attitudes of people who think that they are better than others.

The Lord pours out---chari-TEA (love) generosi-TEA, humili-TEA, integri-TEA, sensitivi-TEA, and sereni-TEA....to name a few.

Daily choices---cuppas brewed afresh---and served by the Lord are an encouraging way to start one's day.

My encouragement came after the presentation when Charlie Martin told how Terry Parlow, my blind paralyzed friend, whom Charlie had assumed was too sick to attend, made an effort to come so he could hear, Dotsy. When the van lift would not work, his care giver "Miss Ronnie" pushed him in his wheelchair from his condo all the way to church. The distance isn't far UNLESS you're the one pushing big ole Terry in the wheelchair---"uphill" most of the way according to him.
I "puddled."
I can't remember when I've been so encouraged. Isn't that so like God---we try to minister to others in His name BUT we are the ones who are truly blessed!

A Cuppa Necessi-TEA

......And what does the LORD require of you But....to love kindness, And to walk humbly.... ?(Micah 6:8, KJV)
A cup of tea, fast internet connection and a trustworthy best friend are some of the bare necessities of modern life, according to a Daily Mail internet survey. Also included were television, iPhone, and a car. Naturally, a cup of tea was #1, as the survey was done among the Brits. As a tea lover, I concur. I would also add a crossword puzzle to my list and a FRIXiON Clicker 07 erasable pen.

This past week I have experienced life in a place with no daily weather reports, (unless one requested them)----we just walked outside for a temp ck and looked up to see the cloud cover---or lack there of. At home, the weather can tend to rule conversation and scheduling.
I knew little of the world's happening---Seattle slayings or Ebola possibility until I returned home. It was a welcome respite from the barrage of negative news which tend to overtake our media and can make me feel sad and helpless.

No cell reception, limited TV (by choice) and a car that stayed "mostly" parked was very welcome. We tooled around in a golf cart. Even food, which is a universal necessity, was "eating what was at hand." (OK, so much of what was "at hand" was delivered by Chef, Simon.) But....bacon and eggs and a simple grilled cheese are equally good to curb one's hunger.
Much of the preceding list was "tongue-in-cheek" as a way of emphasizing some of the less important things which many folks consider physical necessities. What about spiritual necessities?

But God.....has a way of narrowing down true necessities to kindness and humility----using those "times away" to draw one unto Himself. Heart preparation can occur in the still moments so that the bulldozer of God's Spirit can arrive and begin to touch our soul each day in a new way. True relational necessities linked and strengthened with those spiritual chains of shared-faith.
Sharing morning devotions around a table after laughing over unique breakfast choices, think "sweets." Sharing and caring.
Celebrating life.....whether in song and dance with "toasts," or in the simple acts of a Scrabble game or singing hymns with lots of la-la-las when no one can quite remember all the words.
Doing dishes together at the sink. Pooling our minds together to come up with a crossword answer or just a random fact that somehow escapes our memories.....until later. Then, we're free to shout it out, without condemnation.
A cuppa spiritual necessi-TEA sweetened with relational integrity and served with kindness and humility.

Sereni-TEA : a BIG cuppa

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;
(Philippians 2:3, NASB)

Do you know someone who sips from a cuppa humili-TEA everyday? I do.
The Henizes---who put others first---always. Their door is aways open. Their humility spills over into the lives of every one they know.

They practice Ephesians 4:32. Kindness to others! Marge and Larry Henize exude it!
They embody the gospel and live it every moment of every day---at least every moment I've ever been with them.

For us, visiting in their home is as close to heaven as one can be. It's like a retreat. Blessings abound! Open-eyed prayers so you can face the ones you love. Yummy food. Table talk. Stories. LAUGHTER! Sharing. Peace. Serenity.
Reading aloud caps off a day in the mountains---nothing like it!!!
No better place---to sip a cuppa sereni-TEA. For me, it's the BIGGEST cuppa sereni-TEA available this side of heaven.

s-TEA-rife tempered by captivi-TEA

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:5, NIT)
Strife. What is it? What causes it? What can one do about it?
My life must have it as I often realize my teeth are clenched. Even my shoulders seem to stay "clenched" lately. Up around my ears----until I intentionally pull them down, willing myself to calm down and relax.
Then, yesterday my iPad notes from 2 years ago opened wide for me to see:

  • Strife---an inside job---it springs from within
  • Strife---the enemy of peace and calm
  • Root of strife = SELF-Worldiness, aka pride (opposite of pride is humility)
  • Strife is conflict between our thinking and God's word.
  • Mood-induced thoughts can keep me in turmoil, aka strife.
  • Real issue--Whom will I love? God or the world? James 4:4 asks, "don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God?"

Good riddance for strife---submit to God, draw near to Him and as He reciprocates by drawing near as well, it becomes much easier to take every "rebellious self" thought captive.
God gracefully serves us cuppa after cuppa of humili--TEA, puri-TEA, and in-TEA-macy once we pour out the dregs of enmi-TEA and s-TEA-rife that have stained the insides of our former cuppa.

absurdi-TEA

And I set my mind to know wisdom and.....; I realized that this also is striving after wind. Because in much wisdom there is much grief, and increasing knowledge results in increasing pain. (Ecclesiastes 1:17-18, NASB)
Has pursuit of knowledge become somewhat of an all consuming past-time? Is the immediacy "to know" an addiction? Did such a pursuit change Google from a proper noun search engine company's name to a verb?
Google, as a verb, is known by every one from toddlers to seniors. Will "Just google it." be recorded in a baby book as a child's first sentence?

In Kipling's Jungle Book, "The motto of all the mongoose family is “Run and find out,” and Rikki-Tikki was a true mongoose." Curious to find out.
Much like that mogoose mantra, we too seem like a member of said family. We all "run to find out!" We just call it googling.
Vexation and pain can be by-products of too much knowledge. Maybe, it's because amassing knowledge, just for the sake of more knowledge, isn't the answer to one's problems. The more we know isn't a cure-all---it's what we do with what we know that counts. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. (1 Corinthians 8:1)

Definitely there are many "new-fangled" tech-oriented potential absurdities in life---from googling and tweets to selfies and instagrams. In an age of BYOD (bring your own device) it's all about immediacy and it seems highly addictive. But let's forgo those cuppas absurdi-TEAs and serve something more relational.
A cuppa humili-TEA, anyone.

"haugh-TEA--pomposi-TEA---superiori-TEA--vani-TEA"

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18, NIV)
How many ways can one "negatively" spell pride? A.r.r.o.g.a.n.t./ B.o.a.s.t.f.u.l. / C.o.n.c.e.i.t. / H.u.b.r.i.s. / S.n.o.o.t.y.
How many destructive results can pride bring into one's life?
  • Pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God. (2 Chronicles 26:16)
  • Pride is as a chain about their neck (bondage) (Psalm 73:6)
  • When pride cometh, then cometh shame (Proverbs 11:12)
  • Only by pride cometh contention (quarreling) (Proverbs 13:10)
  • A man's pride shall bring him low: (Proverbs 29:23)
The results are destructive; the root is pride. What's the root of pride? Self!!!!!!!!!

prIde---(self) is in the middle of it all.
Memo to prideful person: "Get over yourself."
When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. (Proverbs 11:2)

Drain those dregs of haugh-TEA-ness, pomposi-TEA, superiori-TEA and vani-TEA from your life's cuppa and allow the Lord to serve you a cuppa humili-TEA from His wounded hands!

"sui-TEA-ble"

Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. (Philippians 2:3, ESV)

In desperate need of something to write info on, I picked up a copy of "The Memphis Flyer" (4/24/14)  stacked on the counter at Lost Pizza. Normally, the "Flyer" is rarely on my reading radar. But....the need for paper was great.
With said paper in my carseat (after garnering my info) and me with some waiting time, I started thumbing 'til a verse of poetry caught my eye. I began to read......
Like the author, Bruce VanWyngarden, I agreed that Walt Whitman's poem, "Song of Myself" (1855) gave "an uncanny descriptive definition of Facebook" and other social media sites.
No need for end of year family review letters,* we now have daily "reviews at our fingertips" thru a barrage of tech blitz. We're bombarded with INFO.
This personal marketing blitz allows each to present self as he/she wants others to see him/her and Twitter and Instagram allow photographic proof of  good times, proud mommy moments and photo-shopped pix of our almost "true self."

"I celebrate myself and sing myself" penned Whitman. VanWyngarden suggested that if Whitman had posted his work on-line today he could call it, "Song of My Selfie."
But God.......showed me that I cannot smugly stop here just because I don't FB or "tweet" and instagram, .......'cause I do blog.

I blog what I think, feel, and believe. I post pix of lots of teacups that don't show the rest of my messy countertop. Isn't that like a partial truth?

All that to say, I want a mea-TEA blog---meaty with God's truth. NOT a ME-tea blog that's all about me.

A blog that serves the reader a "sui-TEA-ble "cuppa of God's word. A cuppa that meets him at his point of need. Suitable and significant for giving God's grace, unique to each reader!

*BTW, If I'm on your Christmas letter list, please keep me there. Remember, I'm "old school."

"sen-TEA-ment"

But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself....(Acts 20:24, KJV)
Sipping my morning brew from a cuppa with much sentimental value had warm nostalgia tugging at me as I began my Tea With Thee time. Certainly, there is a place for sentimentality in our lives. My "stuff" reflects my sentimental nature. I have LOTS of sentimental "tea" items.

But God....through today's My Utmost for His Highest entry, "Could This Be True of Me?" (3/4) got my attention. "It is easier to serve God without a vision (or call) because then you are not bothered by what God requires." Oswald Chambers likened such behavior as "actions guided by common sense, veneered over with Christian sen-TEA-ment."  Not focusing on "what God requires." Service for the Lord is NOT a place for sentiment. Sentiment can give a distorted spiritual picture. More me than Thee. Just a veneer to make my service look pretty.

Chambers' entry spoke to my heart because I am so influenced by my emotions and feelings----that it can become a detriment. Plus, I'm pragmatic to the core and both emotions and practicality can be a deterrent to "abandonment to God." (Chambers)
May I pray, as Chambers concluded. "Lord may I not consider if I am of use but may I only consider that I am Yours. May I serve You and do only what you require---act with justice, love kindness and walk humbly with you, O God." (Micah 6:8)

"tea" blends

1) O Lord, my heart is not proud, nor my eyes haughty;
 ; (humili-TEA)
Nor do I involve myself in great matters,

Or in things too difficult for me. (teachabili-TEA)
2) Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; (sereni-TEA)
Like a weaned child rests against his mother,
 (tranquili-TEA)
My soul is like a weaned child within me. (gra-TEA-tude)
3) O Israel, hope in the Lord  (sweetness of Hope in Him)
From this time forth and forever. (eterni-TEA) (Psalm 131)

Sometimes I desire a stronger morning cuppa. Sometimes I need one. Sometimes a longer steeping time helps, but that's tricky because bitterness can be the result. Usually I just defer to master tea blenders and use one of theirs----blends from all the best tea growing regions. This morning I found a psalm that seemed to blend the best "teas" for my morning cuppa.

Psalm 131 is one of the shortest of the Psalms, "but one of the longest to learn" as C. H. Spurgeon says. (Treasury of David, vol. 6, p. 136)
Yet, those 3 verses can provide beneficial blends to my life's cuppa. Humili-TEA. Teachabili-TEA. Sereni-TEA. Tranquili-TEA. Gra-TEA-tude. All blended and sweetened with hope for eterni-TEA)
.
Again, Spurgeon says it well, "Lowliness and humility are here seen in connection with a sanctified heart, a will subdued to the mind of God, and a hope looking to the Lord alone." (Spurgeon, p. 136)

What a sweet "tea blend" to sip and savor as I ponder Psalm 131 throughout my day.

Aspects of Simplicity: Slowing

6/5/13 "Simplicity" has been an often recurring theme in my blog posts this year as far back as March 12. At least that's what a "Dotsy Details simplicity" google search indicated. For the next 3 weeks I hope to share more snippets of simplicity from the specifics of a "Summer Refreshment" study,  "simplici-TEA."
"Slowing" snippets from last nights study group:
  • All true and lasting simplicity will be an overflow of one's central (heart) relationship with the Lord.
  • To simplify, Dallas Willard says one must, "Ruthlessly eliminate "hurry" from your life.
  • "Multi-tasking" is the newly coined word for "hurry sickness." Americans always seem to be in a hurry to accomplish more.
  • "Hurry sickness" is not about having a disordered schedule; rather it's about having a disordered heart. (John Ortberg)
  • Hurry is an inner condition that is fear-based.
  • Moving quickly while walking in-step with God is NOT "hurrying."
  • Everything we do must come forth out of love NOT just from following rules or checking off a to-do list.
  • My cuppa "simplici-TEA" could use a little brevi-TEA, and humili-TEA blended in as well a BIG scoop of "intentionali-TEA" as slowing doesn't come easy for me.

Tea With Thee
WARNINGS from yesterday, in case you missed it.

Today's "simple truth" (for me) came in this morning's Commercial Appeal.   "Labor intensive" value of a great caramel cake caught my eye. Well, that's my all-time favorite cake---I could just suck the icing right off of it. But, who has the time to make it & caramelize all that sugar. At my house, BURNING would come into play.
What I loved was the simple solution given----one with a punch. Just order one from Sugarees, in New Albany, MS makes them, which a previous blog stated but.....according to the CA article, you can request EXTRA icing. So-o-o grateful for that tasty tid-bit!!!
Oh my........ that's worth "slowing" for!  If I practiced "slowing" by taking 5 minutes to walk from my kitchen to the living room with a piece of caramel cake in hand, I'm sure just focusing on & savoring that icing would simplify the process.

"a spot of tea"

11/17/12 humiliTEA---I still need a few more little sips.
As I was closing my NIV Bible this morning, I noticed on the frontispiece a "defining" note. Son Buddy's definition for humility, which he called the "key to life."
Humility is a "right" estimation of our life/ self toward God and others. Eyes to see eternal perspective is key to humility. Self turned toward God and others so affirmed what I sensed the Lord started teaching me as I prepared the James chapter 4 lesson. He continues to "show" me that true humility doesn't conclude with a life turned toward God.....but God would have my love and esteem for Him to continue to turn toward others.

It's a reiteration of my "roots and fruits" musings. A heart "rooted" in humility of love and esteem for the Lord bears the fruit of love and service to others.

"Still sipping on that truth, today."

Humili-TEA: a cuppa worth pursuing

7/2/12 Being a tea gal in a coffee world has its moments---many of which are disappointing. However, one of my most affirming moments in my last-minute decision to go to Ukraine was the revelation that tea, the hot variety, would be available 24-7. I’m sure that revelation seems pretty insignificant to most folks, but to me it shows just how personal God can be in his care for us.

Today's morning cuppa  jogged that memory for me and I spent time praying for my “new-found” Ukrainian friends. I thanked God for the privilege of being found faithful and put into ministry at Kompas Park  by Him.  In Ukraine, which I first considered uttermost part of the earth (Acts 1:8) because it was so far from my Memphis address, I felt at home---a home full of good neighbors---always reaching out and caring for you.  Neighbors of joy, unselfishness and love, united in Spirit and bound together by a single purpose: to know God better.

I was humbled by God’s goodness for me during those 12 days abroad. I was humbled by the acceptance of “hard places” by many of the women at the Mom and Me Camp. I was humbled by the generosity of time and energy that the Ukrainian leadership "babies team" used to benefit me. I was amazed at their “humility” reservoir.
HumiliTEA, needs more than just a sip or two. HumiliTEA is the cuppa all should drink deeply from because our Savior was humility personified.
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility, value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: (Philippians 2:3-5)
I mulled over this scriptural definition of humility with my  cuppa at my fingertips. I encourage you to do the same!
As Isaiah 57:15 reminds us: God dwells with those who have a humble and contrite spirit and revives both the repentant heart and the spirit of the humble. Glory to God.
Слава Богу!   (For Ukrainian sisters) When I hear you praying this, it sounds like Slava bohja----but regardless of the language, may we all choose to glorify the Lord.
Glory to God who showed me more of Himself, through the humility in your lives, which I saw so clearly last week.
Humili-TEA---a great cuppa for us all!

What’s your Christmas morn cup of tea??

12/25/10 This morning during my “Warriors on the Wall” prayer time, I noticed that Pastor Cole asks for prayer for sensitiviTEA, puriTEA and humiliTEA toward the Lord and in ministry and life!
Certainly excellent choices for one who shepherds God’s flock.

What’s your cup of tea this Christmas morning? I hope that we all sip from the cup of eterniTEA!

Merry Christmas and God Bless!! (Luke 2:1-20)
