KEYS TO PROFITABLE BIBLE STUDY

Meditating on John 14:10, recently, I was drawn to a sentence in The Path to the Cross (6/1 entry) Careful attention to prepositions is one key to profitable Bible study!
Hmmmm....preposition---a part of speech we all know but what took on new meaning for me was the relational aspect of prepositions, beyond the relative physical positions......beyond the allotment and filling of shared space. (Ronnie Stevens)
Speaking of the Spirit of Truth in John 14:17, God's word reminds us (believers) ...you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you." Since our salvation, the Holy Spirit of God, has been omnipresent with us. What joy that brings!

Looking forward to John 15, a favorite chapter of mine, where the verb, abide, has always stood out. This time I'll be on the look out for key prepositions to deepen my understanding in a new way!

THANKSGIVINGS TO REMEMBER!

There are some things familiar about Thanksgiving Day....
..............from the Macy's Parade.....
to sumptuous food...
Whenever in doubt,.....
choose"All the above" like on high school tests when you did not know the answer.
FYI key lime, pecan, cheesecake & carrot cake all got votes from the "sweet tooth queen" at our table.

Somethings don't change. It's been a day of giving thanks in our country side 1789. Thanks for the blessings of the harvest and the blessings of the previous year as congress & Washington proclaimed.
"Thank you God prayers" (1 Thessalonians 5:18) are abundant for our family this year as well!!

SABBATH SNAPSHOT : sal-TEA and luminosi-TEA

Today, brother Buddy and I (via Ma Bell) discussed the availability of devotional books---from Sarah Young and Billy Graham to Mrs. Charles Cowman's, Streams in the Desert. So many choices. So many varying lengths.

At Blackberry Farm last week I came across a new one, new to me, at least. Salt and Light by Memphis CUMC pastor, Shane Stanford, had only 25 entries. Could be used during Advent. (Seems perfect for our friends who have taken those 3 week river cruises over these last few years.) Not overwhelming. Refreshment from a new perspective in a given time period that would fit with those travel plans----as 4 days would be left over to cover the 2 travel days bookending the trip.
Also a good starting point for folks trying on "quiet time" ideas. Written with Dr. Ronnie Kent, two perspectives are given on the "devotional" experience. My favorite part was the emphasis on God's Presence!

Division, of 4 "alliterative" sections,----Watch, (Recognizing God's Presence, 1 Corinthians 1:3-9) Wait, (Being in God's Presence, 1Peter 3:8-15a) Witness (Sharing God's Presence, Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11, & John 1: 6-8, 19-28) Worship (Celebrating God's Presence, Luke 1:26-28 & Romans 16:25-27) gives an overview to the reader and are seen as the natural progressions of our relationship with God. (p.12)
Consistency of time in word and prayer are given, along with life objectives and things to consider and principles to live by.....along with a "warning"---"If you have a time with God each day to prove your devotion to Him, It will not work!

 I appreciate an honest man of the cloth.

Dance First? Think First?

1/3/11 Titles have a way of grabbing me when I'm browsing bookstore shelves, especially if "dance" is mentioned. The result is usually perusal of the table of contents.
I choose not to read summaries because too often they can spoil a good read. Fiction books are often too short a read for a purchase but I jot down those titles to check my "local" library's stock. Being a faithful library patron, as well as a frugal shopper, I'm probably not a bookstore's favorite customer.
I also don't buy quote books since quotes are readily available on line. But.....I will thumb through them to grasp words to "google" if one jumps out at me. I did just that on a recent book store browse.
In Dance First, Think Later, (which I think is a Beckett quote) there was a phrase in the forward that had me thinking....."eat your sandwich." It was a metaphor for enjoying the ordinary---a making the "most of life's little moments-type" analogy.

It's what I've been thinking about lately as I'm trying to regain my enthusiasm for "dancing" through all the regular, sometimes mundane, routines of life. It's more than just wanting to see God's Hand in my life. It's wanting to grab hold of that hand and allow Him to keep me dancing to His music----the songs/melodies He's picked because they suit my rhythm best. The rhythm He gave me!

As God would have it, Katherine's recent devotional gift speaks directly to that desire. Practically Holy is a daily guide to "Finding God in the Everyday." The everyday of "sandwich eating."

That's what I've been thinking about. Hopefully, now I will be able to "dance" as I eat and am nourished by all those sandwiches God brings into my life everyday.

Pithy with a PUNCH

10/4/10 How does one write the fewest words that say the most and have the greatest impact on the largest group of readers? Obviously, I, the wordy one, am not the one to answer that question.

Sarah Young has that ability. In her devotional book, Jesus Calling, her entries are concise and still true to scripture, with references included.
She writes about universal struggles---fear, pain, trust, etc. She also emphasizes gratitude and expressions of thankfulness to the Lord, regardless of the circumstances. Sarah writes from personal experience---straight from her Spirit-filled heart. Subsequently her entries encourage the reader to wait quietly in God’s presence that he/she might know Him, not just about Him. She does it with just a few choice words.

Oh, how those words speak differently to each reader. Same words. Different reception---depending on each reader’s own personal radar.

Ponder this passage from Psalm 119.
9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word.
10 I seek you with all my heart;

do not let me stray from your commands.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart

that I might not sin against you.
12 Praise be to you, O LORD;

teach me your decrees.
13 With my lips I recount

all the laws that come from your mouth.
14 I rejoice in following your statutes

as one rejoices in great riches.
15 I meditate on your precepts

and consider your ways.
16 I delight in your decrees;

I will not neglect your word.
Assignment: Do a pithy rewrite of this scripture. (No more than 10-15 words.) Give it a punch so that you can remember the impressions the Lord gave to you as you meditated on it.

BTW, to all of you who have been on the same page with me, reading Jesus Calling daily throughout my cancer struggle, I would like you to join me in praying for Sarah as she struggles daily with vertigo and the aftermath of Lyme Disease. If you are led to pray certain scriptures for her or have been encouraged by Jesus Calling, let me know and I will pass it on to her. We need to let her know what a powerful punch her pithy prose has had on our lives----so much so that we’ve given that “little” book to family, friends worldwide, doctors and nurses whom we don’t even know, as well as leaving them in airports and hotel rooms as a way to bless the heart of a total stranger.
